Approximately 6,000 employees, their
families and friends attended the annual pic
nic at Camp Straus on July 4.
The program started at 9:30 A. M. and from
then until noon there was an assortment of games
and contests for all age groups. The feature at
traction of the morning period was Tom Wiswell,
world’s unrestricted checker champion. Several
Ecustan’s had draws with Mr. Wiswell, but none
were able to beat him.
At 2:00 P. M. Messrs. P. C. Brownell and N.
H. Collisson welcomed the large group to the pic
nic. Mr. Collisson brought greetings from Mr.
John W. Hanes, who was sailing to Europe on
America’s largest and fastest ship, The United
States, which broke the record of the Queen Mary
for a West to East crossing by 10 hours and 2
minutes.
The Archery exhibition was cancelled since O.
K. Smathers and Harry Ballard were entered in
the Southeastern Championship matches at Mem
phis, Tennessee. Many regreted that they could
not see these two boys in action, but they will be
happy to learn that O. K. successfully defended his
title of Southeastern Champion, and Harry took
fourth place in the single events.
The climax of the day was the double-header
baseball game between Ecusta and Tryon. Ecusta
won both games by scores of 8-2 and 6-0.
