SMATHERS AND RUTH HARDIN TAKE FIRST PLACE IN ECUSTA ARCHERY TOURNEY Approximately thirty archery enthusiasts took part in Ecusta’s first archery tournament held at Camp Harry H. Straus on Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17. O. K. Smathers, North CaroHna State Archery Champion who placed eighth in the National Tournament at Jackson, Michigan, took first place in the men’s division and Ruth Hardin won first place in the women’s division. Following in their father’s footsteps Kenny Smathers won first place in the Boys’ beginners division and Lynn Smathers took first place in the Intermediate girls division. Two other young Ecustans following the pattern of their fathers were Harry Ballard, Jr., who won first place in the Intermediate boys’ division and Malinda Bangs who took second place in the Intermediate girls’ division. Becky Hudson took first place in the Junior girls’ division. There were no entrants in the Junior boys’ division. Following is a list of the winners, in the division in which they participated, and their place. MEN’S DIVISION 1st place—O. K. Smathers 2nd place—Harry Ballard 3rd place—Bill Bangs WOMEN’S DIVISION 1st place—Ruth Hardin 2nd place—Doris Curwen JUNIOR GIRLS 1st place—Becky Hudson INTERMEDIATE BOYS 1st place—Harry Ballard, Jr. 2nd place—Edwin Garrett III 3rd place—Johnny Reynolds INTERMEDIATE GIRLS 1st place—Lynne Smathers 2nd place—Malinda Bangs BEGINNERS BOYS 1st place—Kenny Smathers 2nd place—Hugh Bradburn, Jr. 3rd place—Jimmy Garrett ECUSTANS WNC BOWLING TEAM OPENS 1952 & 1953 SEASON Ecusta’s WNC Bowling team, defending Cham pions of the Western North Carolina Ten Pen League, opened its 1952 and 1953 season on Tues day night, August 19, with a 2 to 1 win over the Stikeleather team of Asheville. Lewis Meece and Chris Rogers were elected co captains of the Ecusta team for the coming season. Members of the team, who will assist Meece and Rogers in an effort to retain the crown are, John Emory, Bruce Reynolds, Ed Lass, Clyde Galloway and Jim Metcalf. 13
