SOUTHER AND LINK HEAD ECUSTA BOWLING LEAGUE Harvey Souther and Charles Link were elected to the offices of President and Vice President re spectively, at the first organizational meeting of our Ecusta Bowling League for the 1952-53 season with Fritz Merrell acting Secretary and Treasurer. The meeting was held at the Ecusta Medical build ing on Wednesday afternoon, September 3, with seven teams represented. The status of the league was discussed and due to the uncertainty of the number of teams desiring to bowl a second meet ing was set for Wednesday, September 10. At the meeting on September 10, nine teams were represented and the possibilities of a tenth team being formed, therefore those present adopted a ten team schedule for the coming season. The league play started on Friday night Sep tember 26, at the Biltmore Plaza Bowling Center, at 7:30 P. M. The schedule calls for 27 weeks of play from September 26, 1952 to April 10, 1953 with the two nights of December 26 and January 2 open due to the holiday season. The ten teams composing the league and their team captains are as follows: The defending champion Bees with Arthur Lindley as Captain; Hillbillies, David Sams; Transportation, Jim Met calf; Electric Shop, "Sparkies”, Wm. Crompton; Pirates, Harvey Souther; Cello-Mecks, Charles Link; Champagne, Conward McClure; Pick Ups, Arthur Owens; Alley Cats, George Sexton; and Clear Paper, Albert Kriek. W. N. C. ECUSTA BOWLERS IN THIRD PLACE Our Ecusta bowlers whitewashed the Haynes Elec tric keglers 3 to 0 on Tuesday night, September 23 to take over third place in the W. N. C. League race, after six weeks of league play our Ecusta team has won 11 games and lost 7 in defense of its 1951-52 championship title. Bruce Reynolds is leading the team with an av erage of 195 pins per game for 18 games played. Ed Lass has a 187 average for 12 games; Lewis Meece 182 for 18 games, Clyde Galloway 177 for 12 games, Chris Rogers 177 for 9 games, John Emory 174 for 15 games and Jim Metcalf 164 for 6 games bowled. BOWLING ETIQUETTE Etiquette and sportsmanship go hand in hand in all forms of sport. In the game of tenpins a code of etiquette has been established and has been accepted by bowlers everywhere. Few of its rules are official, but respect for these "unwritten laws give consideration at all times to the rights of the other bowler. Here are some rules worthy of study and application: The beginner should be helped, not ridiculed. Many a prospective bowler has been laughed out of the sport. Proper equipment is a prime requisite in all sports. A good pair of bowling shoes will out last many pairs of dress shoes and cost much less. Consideration should be given the fact that stiff soles do not permit the foot muscles to function properly when bowling, nor can the proper foot hold be obtained. Leather heels, especially, will deface and scar the approaches, while rubber heels often prevent bowlers from sliding properly. Chalk should never be used on bowling shoes. It causes the leather to crack and leaves the approaches in a bad condition. Never attempt to remedy either a sticky or a slick approach condition by the use of chalk or any powder. This can greatly inconvenience the bowler who follows you, who may be wearing bowling shoes. The management provides steel wool for the purpose of cleaning the approaches. Call his attention to any faulty condition of the approach. Do not use a ball which is the private property of someone else unless given express permission to (Continued on page 14) 12
