The Winchester plant (above) is a familiar sight to New Haven residents and visitors. \ WINCHESTER | j has i i INTERESTING \ I HISTORY I ifooooooOPQQQ Q Qa&iLOJLSLiLgJLOJLSLgJ^^ The Winchester Repeating Arms Company of New Haven, Conn., a Division of Olin Indus- Industries, Inc., has a very interesting history. The Winchester plant, located about a mile from the center of New Haven, is one of the largest manufacturing plants in Connecticut and one which has had a long and important history. The main plant alone covers an area of 81 acres which does not take into consideration its powder storage and proving grounds. The buildings con tain a total of 3,250,000 square feet of floor space and cover about nine city blocks. In addition to its large production of sporting arms and ammunition, the Winchester plant pro duces in volume, flashlights and batteries, radio and hearing aid batteries, roller skates, brass, cop per, bronze, phosphor bronze and nickel silver in sheets, strips, coils or as fabricated parts. Winchester Repeating Arms Company was first incorporated in New Haven in 1866 and there are still among its buildings, one or two factory structures that go back to its early days. From
