BOWLING LEAGUE RACE IS ON The race for the 1952-53 laurels of the Ecusta Bowling League got under way on Friday night September 26, with ten teams bidding for the honors. The defending champion Bees team will go all out to try and retain the championship crown. However, the Bees suffered an upset the first night of the season as they were defeated by the Sparkies two games out of three. At this writing three matches have been bowled through Friday, October 10th. The results for the first night of play on Friday September 26, the Champagne keglers turned in the only shutout of the night, by defeating the Pick Ups 3 to 0. In the other matches the Electric Shop "Sparkies”, Hillbillies, Pirates and Alley Cats defeated the Bees, Transportation, Cello-Mecks and Clear Paper teams two games out of three in this respective order. The results of the second week of bowling were somewhat unique and different from the first week as all the matches were won by a decisive score of 3 to 0. The Hillbillies defeated the Cello-Mecks 3 to 0, Pirates 3 over Clear Paper, Sparkies 3, Pick Ups 0, Bees 3, Champagne 0, and Transportation 3 over the Alley Cats. At the end of two weeks of play the Hillbillies, Pirates and Sparkies were tied for first place with 5 wins and 1 loss each. In the third week of play the Pirates, Alley Cats and Cello-Mecks each won 3 to 0 victories over the Sparkies, Pick Ups and Champagne teams re spectively. While the Bees defeated Transporta tion 2 to 1 and the Hillbillies won over the Clear Paper two games out of three. Some very interesting and close competitive games have been bowled in these three weeks of play, which is’a good sign of some red hot matches during the coming season. The Pirates took over undisputed possession of first place after the third week, one game ahead of the second place Hillbillies, and two games ahead of the third place Bees; with the Sparkies, Transportation and Alley Cats all in a tie for fourth place. With the season in its infancy it would be hard for Gutter Gus to make any prediction at this time, however, there is one thing certain that the team that wins the 1952-53 crown will have fought hard to earn the honors come April 10, 1953. STANDINGS THROUGH OCTOBER 17 TEAM WON LOST Pirates 10 2 Hillbillies 9 3 Transportation 8 4 Bees 7 5 Cello-Mecks 7 5 Champagne 6 6 Alley Cats 6 6 Sparkies 5 7 Clear Paper 2 10 Pick Ups 0 12 STAR OF THE MONTH Individual laurels for the first three weeks go to John Emory of the Bees, who came through with a three game total score of 564 pins the first night of the season. Lewis Meece of the Hillbillies was the next highest when he turned in a 562 pin set and a 210 pin game during the second week of play. Each month Gutter Gus shall endeavor to honor the Ecusta bowler who has displayed the best in dividual performance during that period, in this column of The ECHO. 13
