HUNTING RULES FOR 1952-53 The Safety section of this issue of The Echo as you will note is devoted to the rules of safety while hunting. Hunting is truly a great sport and we have many nimrods here at Ecusta and as you embark on your adventure into the wilds we hope that you will observe these safety rules and have a successful and profitable hunt. So in keeping with the hunting season we are listing below some of the rules and regulations pertaining to the hunting of different game ani mals in and around Western North Carolina. If we fail to list some regulations you are interested in please call the Athletic Department, OPEN SEASONS AND BAG LIMITS ON GAME SPECIES It shall be unlawful for any person to take, or to have in his possession, any game bird or game an imal except during the season and in accordance with the limits herein prescribed, unless otherwise specifically permitted by law. Lawful seasons and bag limits for each species are from sunrise on the first day of the listed season to sunset on the last day of the listed season, with all dates being in clusive except for Sundays. A. BEAR 1. Open Season: OCTOBER 15 - JANUARY 1. Exception: (a) In the Western counties where the hunting of deer by dogs is prohibited there shall be no hunting of bear during any open season on deer, except as otherwise specified in Wildlife Resources Commission and U. S. Forest Service regulations applying to the Cooperative Wildlife Management Areas. 2. Bag Limits: Daily, 2; Possession, 2; Season, none. Exception: (a) In and west of Alleghany, Wilkes, Caldwell, Burke, and Rutherford counties the bag limits are 1 per day, 2 in possession, and 2 per season. B. DEER (White-tail) Only male deer with visible antlers may be taken. Open Season: NOVEMBER 17 - DECEMBER 6 in the following counties: Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, and Transylvania. Exceptions :■( a) That part of Buncombe Coun ty southeast of Asheville and bounded on the north by U. S. Highway No. 70 and on the west by U. S. Highway No. 25; that part of Hender son County east of U. S. Highway No. 25; that part of Haywood County north of U. S. Highway No. 19A-23; and that part of Jackson County north and west of U. S. Highway No. 19A-23 and N. C. Highway No. 107, are closed to deer hunt ing. E. RACCOON AND OPOSSUM 1. Open Season: OCTOBER 15 - FEBRUARY 14. 2. Bag Limits; No restriction F. RABBITS 1. Open Season: NOVEMBER 27 - JANU ARY 31 2. Bag Limits; Daily, 5; Possession, 10; Seas on, 75. G. SQUIRREL 1. Open Season: OCTOBER 1 - JANUARY 1 (Western) in the following counties; Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Davie, Forsyth, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Ruth erford, Stokes, Surry, Swain, Transylvania, Wa tauga, Wilkes, Yadkin, Yancey. 2. Bag Limits: Daily, 8; Possession, 16; Seas on, 100. Exceptions; (a) In and west of Surry, Wilkes, Alexander, Catawba, Lincoln, and Gaston counties the limits are 6 per day, 12 in possession, and 75 per season, (b) The above limits may include 1 fox squirrel per day, 2 in possession, and 10 per season. H. QUAIL (Bobwhite) I. Open Season: NOVEMBER 27 - JANU ARY 31. 2. Bag Limits; Daily, 8; Possession, 16; Seas on, 100. I. WILD TURKEYS (Gobblers or Toms only) 1. Open Season; NOVEMBER 27 - JANU ARY 31. 2. Bag Limits; Daily, 1; Possession, 2; Season, 3 J. RUFFED GROUSE (Native Pheasant) 1. Open Season; OCTOBER 15-JANUARY 31 Exception;' (a) November 27 - January 31 in and northeast of Mitchell County. 2. Bag Limits: Daily, 3; Possession, 6; Season, 30. Exception; (a) In and northeast of Mitchell County the limits are two per day, 4 in possession, and 20 per season. K. PHEASANTS (all non-native varieties) 1. Open Season: NOVEMBER 1 - JANU ARY 31. Exception (a) No open season in the follow ing counties: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Burke, Currituck, Dare, Davie, Forsyth, Iredell, Pitt, Stokes, Surry, Watauge, Wilkes, Yadkin. 2. Bag Limits; No restriction. L. FOXES (Red and Gray) 1. Open Season; Foxes may be taken with guns when the season is open for any other game bird or animal, except that where county fox laws reg ulate the season, the local law shall prevail. 2.
