NEW COAl HANDLING SYSTEM IN OPERATION The new coal handling system, designed to handle large amounts of coal easier and cheaper, is now in operation at the Power Plant. The previous system was designed to handle stoker coal for the stoker fired boilers numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4, and later expanded to supply coal to boilers 5 and 6. The new installation provides a separate system to handle coal for the pulverized coal fired boilers numbers 5, 6, and 7. Normally the old system will be used for the stoker fired boilers and will be used to supply coal to the silos of boilers 5 and 6 only in the event of an emergency. A bypass chute however, is in stilled to allow routing the coal from the new coal handling system to the old system serving boilers 1 through 6. The capacity of the new system is 75 tons per hour, in addition to the 50 ton-per-hour capacity cf the old system. The new addition is served by a spur track lo cated to the east of the Boiler House at the top of the dyke along the Davidson River. The railroad spots the cars in the vicinity of the unloading hop per, and the cars are moved by means of the car puller to the unloading position to expedite the emptying of cars. The track hopper discharges the coal to the conveyor or feeder which raises it to a rotor type crusher. The crusher separates the tramp iron and deposits the crushed coal onto a belt conveyor which carries it through a totalizing weightometer to the transfer house. Here the coal is discharged either to another conveyor or to the yard storage. If it is transferred to the other conveyor, the coal is taken to an elevation above the Boiler House roof and discharged into a horizontal conveyor for distribution to the various boilers. On the daily deliveries of coal the silos and bunkers, for boilers 5, 6, and 7, are normally filled first, and the balance of the coal delivered is discharged to the yard storage pile. From these piles the coal is distributed to the storage yard by a bulldozer. Coal to be taken from the yard storage area is moved to the reclaiming hopper by bulldozer where it is carried by conveyor to the crusher. The coal, even if already crushed, goes through the crusher again in order to separate any tramp iron that might have been picked up in the storage area. The Power Plant expansion program includes a new boiler, which operates in parallel with the pulverized coal fired boilers numbers 5 and 6, at a maximum continuous capacity of 115,000 pounds of steam per hour. A new non-condensing turbine generator has been installed in the turbine room which has a capacity of 5,000 Kilowatts. 4
