Sam Kent of the Pow.er Department is shown with the 8V4 pound bass that he caught recently in Lake Lure. This large mouth bass was caught on a spinner and was 2J> inches long. POWER By Howell Medford The old "flu bug” started in with a bang in the Power Department. First, Horace Hall was out for a few days. This broke his record for per fect attendance. We are glad to announce the is is now well and on the job again. We are also happy that Mrs. Hall is on the road to recovery. She spent several days in an Ashe ville Hospital. She is now at home and much im proved. Tom Evans was the first to go on a vacation for 1953. We hear he went to sunny Florida for a few days. We know he appreciated the warm weather down there. He will tell us more when he returns. For the first tim.e in twelve years Mr. Finck lost a few days with the flu. We know he hated to break the record already established. One thing he can say is that it’s better to be out a few days than to be seriously ill and be out for weeks. We are happy to see him on the job again and we all hope it will be more than twelve years before he is that sick again. We are glad that Chan Ashworth is able to leave the hospital. He has been very sick for sev eral days. We wish for him a speedy recovery and hope he can soon be back on duty as a regular hand. His father, too, has been sick in an Ashe ville hospital. We hear he will soon be able to return home. Believe it or not, Bill Lyday has already caught four bass and has his father to vouch for it. He- caught them Sunday, January 19, at Glenville. Bob Duckworth said he did not do that well in Florida. (He just returned from a fishing trip.) He says it isn’t fair for Bill to rush the season.. Anyway, Bob knows a couple of fellows that will not join the fishing club. Just for that, too. Leroy Searcey also is on vacation. He is having the tonsils removed. This is a painful way tO' spend a vacation, but it is also a wise move. They were keeping him down with a sore throat. We hope he made it all right. , Lewis Alexander got bit by the flu also, but he recovered very quickly and made an early return to work. Sam Rose is watching for that snow to come. At present there has been very little snow to speak of. We may be certain it will yet come, Sam, and we can eat the snow cream then. Sam used to live where snows fell heavy and frequently. Lem Daniels is sure "Dutch” Bruner will bear watching since "Dutch” was bitten by his house cat. He should have taken shots, Lem says. Why hold the cat in the first place. Maybe the cat can’t tell the difference between man and mouse.
