Thus, I think, we often owe

people, and you think life is mean. Then read
Plutarch, and the world is a proud place, people
with men of positive quality, heroes and demi
gods standing around us who will not let us sleep.

Heading the list of new-comers to the Ecusta
Library is: The Galileans by the famous novelist
Frank G. Slaughter. It is the inspiring story of
history’s most famous sinner, Mary Magdalene.
Flame-haired, beautiful and provocative, this fas
cinating woman was condemned by the sancti
monious—but not by God. The author skillfully
fashions a novel from the stirring events of Jesus’
time—Christ’s raising the daughter of Jairus from
the dead, his feeding the multitude from the
loaves and fishes and the inevitable betrayal by
Judas—These earth-shaking happenings are re
created with a reverent and dramatic force. The
Galileans is the strange and poignant story of an
unpredictable woman and the tumultous people
and miracles that surrounded her beleaguered life,
leaving her in the triumph of her beloved Master’s
Resurrection.

"I am Juan Rodrigo, nicknamed Lepe. I was
the first Christian to sight the New World, al
though my own captain, the niggardly Christopher
Columbus, tried to cheat me of that honor and
did cheat me of his promised rewards: the Queen’s
pension and a velvet doublet . . . .” Thus we em
bark on a lifetime of adventure and romance with
Lepe the hero of The Velvet Doublet by James
Street.
Here is a superb novel—a story of Spain in the
-days of the Inquisition and the great voyages; a
tale of danger and adventure, love, beautiful wom
en, courage and cowardice. It is indeed an excit
ing account of the years when Columbus built an
ocean bridge to the New World.
