DOWN THE ALLEY WITH GUTTER GUS As we near the end of the 1952-53 season of our Ecusta Bowling League, it looks like the Cello- Mecks are certain to cop the championship. How ever, second, third and fourth place positions are as uncertain as the weather and these winners will not be known until the last night of the season. At this writing the Pirates, Transportation, Hill billies and Sparkies are staging' a nip and tuck battle for the second, third and fourth place honors. Lewis Meece, Bruce Reynolds, John Emory, Foy Bryson and Harvey Souther are the five leading bowlers in the highest individual average race. Gutter Gus is proud to say our W. N. C. Bowl ing team moved up to within one game of the W. N. C. League-leading Clover leaf team on Tues day night, March 17. The W. N. C. League has five more matches to play by April 21 and we are hoping our team can move in to first place by then. Good luck, .fellows. Here’s hoping! Gutter Gus would like to commend all the bowlers who participated in our annual Ecusta Bowling Tournament for their fine cooperation in making the annual event a success. Next month we’ll try to give you all the different winners of the 1952-53 season. Be sure all guards are in place before you start your machine. PITY THE POOR BALLPLAYER If you think that the price of foodstuffs is out of proportion with your pay check; and if you think that too much is being sent to Uncle Sam in the way of taxes, pity poor Ted Williams, the Boston baseball slugger. The Foundation for Eco nomic Research concerning net profits after taxes tells us that, while Ted Williams got $125,000 against Babe Ruth’s top of $80,000, Ted’s net after taxes is $62,028. The Babe’s was $68,535. Also, because of rising prices over the past 20 years, Ted would now have to be paid $327,451 to equal Ruth’s 1931 buying power. But remember this, no man worries about death and taxes, pains and woes, shoes unshined or a tear in the britches when the fish are biting. PIGSKIN ODDITIES Forrest "Frosty” Peters was a football player who listened to his coach. In 1924, Montana State played the Junior College, Billings Poly and Mon tana’s coach told Frosty to kick for a goal when ever the team was inside the 40-yard line. Obligingly, Frosty kicked all afternoon, placing 17 dropkicks over the bar, running up a total of 51 points for Montana, and performing the great est kicking feat in football history. 13
