TO APPEAR IN "THUNDERLAND"
Miss Lucille Heffner, Ecusta librarian, has been
selected to play the feminine lead in the 1953
production of "Thunderland”, Bernard Szold, the
Director announced recently.
Miss Heffner will play the role of Rebecca
Boone, opposite Hollywood screen actor Forrest
Tucker, in the outdoor drama
A native of Mills River, she is no newcomer
in W.N.C. entertainment fields. Lucille has ap
peared in various musical shows, band concerts,
radio and TV programs, and other public func
tions. She was also quite active in Little Theater
organizations while attending high school and
college. During World War II she appeared with
entertainment groups at various Veterans’ Hos
pitals, Bond Rallies and Benefit Shows. In addi
tion to her work as Librarian here at Ecusta, she
worked with the Band, the Square Dance team.
Bingo parties, the Choral schools. Cafeteria min
strel shows, and many other employee activity
functions.
She will continue in her position as Ecusta
librarian throughout the production, since re
hearsals and performances of the drama will be
on a night schedule.
"Thunderland” is the story of Daniel Boone’s
leadership of the wilderness settlers in Kentucky,
Starting June 26, it will be presented six nights
a week, for ten weeks, at the Forest Amphitheater.
This large outdoor theater is located on N. C.
Route 280, near Long Shoals Bridge, approxi
mately ten miles from Asheville and 20 miles
from Brevard.
GROVER FRISBEE IS APPOINTED MANAGER OF THE ECUSTA
BASEBALL TEAM
Grover Frisbee of the Maintenance Depart
ment has been appointed Playing Manager of the
1953 Ecusta team in the W.N.C. Industrial Base
ball League by the Athletic Supervisor, Fritz Mer-
rell. Fritz will maintain the position as business
manager of the club and will continue as a player
and coach. Fritz stated that with Grover serving
as playing manager, he will feel free to devote
more time and efforts to the promotion of other
athletic and recreation activities this summer.
A native of Spring Creek, Madison County,
Grover began his baseball career at Warren Wil
son Junior College. He was first scouted by the
St. Louis Browns while he was playing with Haz
elwood. He was later signed by the Cincinnati
Reds while he was playing with Martel Mills.
He was sent to Columbia, S. C., where he had
a 5-4 record for half the season. Columbia sent
him to Ogden, Utah of the Pioneer League where
he had a 12-9 record and a 2.9 earned run aver
age. He was recalled from Ogden and sold to
Charleston, S. C. From Charleston he was again
sent to Ogden where he won 14 while losing 6,
and had an equally impressive ERA.
Grover went to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1951 and
from there back to Charleston. When the Charles
ton team broke up, he returned to Ogden where
he pitched 4 shutouts in a row.
Cincinnati tried to get Grover to go to Co
lumbia last year, but he and his wife decided they
had had enough traveling. Grover says that he
likes his job, the community and the people here
so well that he definitely decided against any
offer.
