DEPARTMENTAL NEWS PAPER DIVISION "A" SHIFT MACHINE ROOM By Richard Nicholson Greetings, salutations, and a happy May to all of you dear readers. The following fellows have either taken or are soon scheduled to have their vacations from this shift. They are Harold Byers, Paul (Pussel) Simpson, Robert Davis, Joe Jones, Earl Frady, and Liston (Red) Hughey. Glad to see that our skipper, John Brewer, who recently underwent an operation, has returned to work. Question: Why is Lewy Guice complaining of the sore throat so very often here lately? Answer: I don’t know! I don’t know! Freddie don’t let the boys get your dander up too much with their ribbing about "certain as pects” of the local baseball situation. Keep your chin up and remember to count to ten. Red Hughey longs for his old food choppers. His present ones haven't become too well ad justed to their new habitat it seems. Here’s hoping that we can all profit by our mis takes; pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps; and Hnd our own pastures to be greener than those of others. "B" SHIFT MACHINE ROOM By Jack Williams "May”, "May”, "May” we have some warm days? We are all getting tired of these “Frosty mornings and windy weather.” Although this is written some time in advance we "May” want some cool day’s by the time this is published. We are glad to have Mr. Brewer back with us after his illness and also James Roberson. There’s no way to hold Clifford down since he went into business. He is now running for "May or” of "Hog Town” and also is on the committee to help Walter Smith welcome the tourists into Hendersonville this year. Watch out "Footsy”, your pants will get too small for you. Poteet had the prize catch of the fish so far for our shift. He caught a 16 25/32 inch rainbow all by himself. Of course he helped stock the stream. Roberts had a tough luck story to tell of his fishing trip. He wanted to get his car off of the main road and drove down an old logging road. After going too far in he found out that he couldn’t turn around or couldn’t back out. So he spent 3V2 hours cutting brush and trees with his pocket knife. Finally got the car turned around but it was too late to fish so he didn’t wet a hook J —poor "Tubby”. I was given the title of Crane Operator No. 23 this month. Of course there is always an assistant, mine being "Bugle-Boy” Whiteside. We can all make the mistake and pull the wrong line, boys, but its not a good policy. OK you "Hot Rod Fans”, watch out for Hot Rod Praytor. He has been going over to the wrecked jet airplane procuring parts for his car— more power Praytor. We have two Bird Lovers in our midst—Cun ningham and Whiteside. Seems like some old lady is trying to make bird sitters out of them. Cun ningham goes around now whistling the "Mock ing Bird” Tune and brushing off his shoulders. For "Land’s Sake”, Wm. Gash is on his vaca tion, said he wants to get his crop in the ground. Fred Rogers is also on vacation. For his wife’s sake, for he is building more rooms on to his house. Tinsley is taking his vacation to help put the roof on his father’s house. Seem’s like everyone has great ideas. John Kimzey has worries. He has been trying to decide for the past three months if he should buy a new car or build on to his house. Ballard had two weeks vacation, he said for farming. He couldn’t get anything done for just looking at those 3000 cabbage plants he has out. Bert Neal came in with a good cut on that "ball” head of his. Says he didn’t go to Horse Shoe. It was his stove wood and his wife—such power. Mull is still looking for 100 pigs for 10 bucks. Don’t forget boys, if you catch any fish, let us hear about them. Now if it is the largest one you have ever caught, do as Wilkie did—bring it in and show it. Everyone is geting the idea that Poteet and "Bad-Eye” think they are the only ones that can change the wet felts on No. 6. "Bad-Eye” said he is going to fool ’em next month. He is going to take his vacation on days. Ollie is getting the name of "Wise King”, or is it he just didn’t trust the other shift for that wire change on No. 1. Rice has gone into the chicken business. He has about 15 to start with and has been sitting up nights regularly with them He and his wife wanted to go visiting over to Carl Watson’s the other night but Rice didn’t want to leave the chickens at home alone. He finally agreed to go after putting the chickens in a box and taking them with him. "Bad-Eye” brought in a rabbit skin and gave it 18
