A community is just as friendly as the coldest inhabitant because usually that one will be picked for judgment by a visitor or stranger? ^ BREVARD BOWLING CENTER NOW IN OPERATION Since so many Ecusta employees have ex pressed a desire to have bowling in Bre vard, we are very happy that T. T. Loftis has recently announced the opening of the new Brevard Bowling Center. The center has six alleys, suitable for bowling both ten pins and duck pins, which have been approved by the American Bowl ing Congress. This will enable the plant teams to bowl this winter without making the 60 miles round trip to the Asheville alleys. Mr. Loftis is owner and operator of the new bowling center, which is located on North Caldwell Street. SMATHERS, BALLARD TAKE FIRST, SECOND PLACE IN SOUTHEASTERN ARCHERY MEET HELD IN ST. PETERSBURG O. K. Smathers (Electric Shop, Ecusta Paper Division), using a fibreglass bow with a home- rnade steel string, made a clean sweep in all three divisions of the Southeastern Archery Meet held July 5-6 and ended up with the championship for the fourth year in succession. In addition to taking the championship, O. K. tallied 901 points in the York Round, a total which has been topped but once in recent history. The previous high score was 956, made in 1952. The average is around 700 points. The York Round consists of shooting 72 ar rows at 100 yards; 48 arrows at 80 yards and 24 arrows at 60 yards. Apparently not content with almost surpassing the world record score in the York Round, Smathers twice shot six bullseyes in succession— once at 60 yards and once at 40 yards. From the York Round, he went on to take the American Round with 716 points and the Clout Round with 198. In the Clout Round, the archer shoots high into the air in an effort to hit a target lying flat on the ground 180 yards away. After clinching the championship, O. K. went on to take first place in the Field Shoot. In this contest, archers, without benefit of bow-sights, range over fields and wooded areas shooting at dummy animal targets which pop up suddenly in front of them. Another Ecusmn, Harry Ballard (Maintenance, Ecusta Paper Division), also participated in the Meet and came away with the runner-up trophy. He took second in the American Round with a score of 666, second in the York Round with 560 points and second in the Clout with 186. "When I drive, I don’t go over thirty. That’s fast enough for anybody.” When a motorist says that, you may think he’s got the right idea for safety. But has he? There are many roads, its true, where any speed over thirty miles an hour may be dangerous. But on today’s highways, driving less than thirty may actually hold up the flow of traffic and even cause accidents. In the same way, conditions are changing in our factories. Modern machinery and streamlined methods are bringing new conditions. Safety to day requires quick thinking and acting. You may get hurt if you rely on outworn safety habits in the faster pace of modern production. 4- Growing pains come when a kid goes to the I movies and has to pay adult prices for the first ^ time.—Bernie Wayne 15
