AT THE 1953 COACHING SCHOOL % Two hundred and thirty-two boys and girls took part in the 1953 session of the Camp Harry H. Straus Coaching School with a total of 116 boys and 78 girls receiving awards. The school was conducted som-swhat in the same manner as previous years, however this was the first time a school for girls has been conduct ed to cover sports other than swimming. The sessions for boys were held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and the girls at tended on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The school opened on Monday, July 13 th and closed on Friday, August 7th. The daily schedule ran from 9:30 a. m. to 12 noon, during which time a schedule of activities including calesthenics, various sports instructions covering baseball, soft ball, basketball, soccer, games and swimming were given to those attending. Much emphasis was given to swimming with a very competent crew, under the leadership of N. A. Miller, Jr., giving instructions. Each Wednesday and Thursday morning in structive movies were shown to better acquaint those attending with the fundamentals of the dif ferent sports. To climax a very successful Coaching School a picnic was given for the girls and boys on the final days, at which time each boy or girl who had attended the school a required number of times received a certificate of merit presented by Mr. L. F. Dixon, and was awarded a Camp Harry H. Straus Coaching School "T” Shirt. CONTINUED . . .
