ECUSTA BOWLING LEAGUES ORGANIZED LEWIS ALEXANDER AND GEORGE SPICER ELECTED PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT Representatives of some twenty-four bowling teams met on Wednesday, September 9th and or ganized leagues for the 1953-54 season. In organizing for the coming season, Lewis Alexander was elected the league’s president and George Spicer the vice president. Fritz Merrell will act as Secretary. Of the twenty-four teams represented, an eigh teen team handicap league was formed and a six- team scratch league. The league’s play will begin on Wednesday night, September 23 at 6:30 p. m., with six teams bowling at that time. At approximately 9:00 o’clock p. m. six more teams will meet in compe tition. On Thursday night the same schedule will be carried out. The six team scratch league will alternate dates and times with the handicap league. However all six scratch league teams will bowl at the same time. Schedules and rules have been distributed to the team captains and bowlers are urged to check with their captains for dates and playing time. From time to time The Echo will carry notes and cartoons on bowling rules and etiquette. Gut ter Gus would like to encourage every bowler to acquaint himself with the rules of the game and especially the rules of etiquette and learn to abide by these rules. You will find that you and your fellow bowlers will enjoy your game a lot more. * * WOMEN’S TEN PIN BOWLING LEAGUE BEING ORGANIZED Two meetings have been held to form an Ecus- ta Women’s Ten Pin Bowling League and at this writing seven teams are definitely formed and plans are under way to form the eighth team, for an eight team league. The tentative date for opening play in the women’s league has been set for Tuesday Octo ber 6th. Another meeting will be held on Friday, Octo ber 2nd to make final plans for the opening and to adopt a schedule. Teams already listed are Machine Booklet, Fin ishing No. 1 and Finishing No. 2, The Officettes, Endless Belt, The Cellophane Office and The Cel lophane Planning. IF (With abject apologies to Rudyard Kipling) If you can roll your ball right down the alley And watch it strike the pocket strong and square; If you can face the pressure of a rally And yet turn in consistent "Strike” and "Spare”; If you can bowl and not be tired of bowling. Or being heckled, don’t give way to fouls. Or losing, don’t let temper stop your rolling Especially while the competition howls; If your name’s listed higher in the scoring As each succeeding bowling night goes by, Remember—that’s no reason for ignoring The humble efforts of the other guy. If you can win a match with score decisive And not let triumph spawn a braggard’s speech; If you can shun remarks that sound derisive And always keep your claims within your reach; If you can greet important games with relish And match the opposition pin for pin. You’ll find no need to garnish or embellish The stories of the matches that you win; If you will concentrate on playing fairly, If you will roll each ball as best you can, If you will lose your temper only rarely And finish up as strong as you began, If you will shun a braggard’s empty prattle And keep emotions tightly in a clamp, Then, my son, you’ve won just half the battle And you’ll more than likely finish up a Champ! 13
