Eisenhower, received the 2,000,000th Winchester Model 94 lever action sporting rifle as a 63rd birthday gift from John M. Olin, president of Olin Industries, Inc., on behalf of the Arms and Ammunition Division employees at the New Hav en, Connecticut plant. The presentation was made in President Eisen hower’s suite in the Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., on October 15, the day after the Presi dent’s birthday on his recent midwestern trip. President Eisenhower was much pleased with the fine workmanship of the Model 94 and want ed all who participated in the manufacture of the rifle to know that he was delighted to have re ceived it. President Eisenhower is the third chief execu tive to have received an anniversary Model 94. The 1,000,000th was given to President Calvin Coolidge in 1927 and the 1,500,000th to President Harry S. Truman on his 64th birthday in 1948. Mr. Olin has revealed that the 2,000,000 Model 94’s which have been produced since it was intro duced 59 years ago, have contributed 18,000,000 man-hours of employment, required 40,000,000 pounds of steel and 40,000 walnut trees. The Model 94 is a lever action repeating rifle which is credited with having taken more deer than any other firearm. It was introduced Octo ber 20, 1894 and was the first American sporting rifle to use cartridges loaded with smokeless powder and introduced the now famous 30-30 Winchester cartridge. The Model 94 is a direct descendent of the lever action repeating Model 73 popular frontier rifle known as "the gun than won the West” which established the reputation of the company founded in 1866 by Oliver F. Win chester, who served as Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut in the 1866-67 term. The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was acquired by Olin Industries in 1931. The Model 94 is a seven-shot repeating rifle and is produced only as a carbine with a 20-inch barrel, in 30-30 and 32 Winchester special cali bers. It weighs about 614 pounds. 5
