SAFETY AT WORK IN THE FILM DIVISION The end of the year 1953 marked the comple tion of two full years of operation of the Film Division. To accentuate the program, a chart was made which compares our experience in 1953 with that in 1952. In 1953 an accident frequency ratio of 1.48 was compiled as compared to 3.42 in 1952 which rep resents a better than 100% improvement over the 1952 ratio. This improvement was directly the result of a reduction in major injuries from 5 in 1952 to 2 in 1953. A major injury is an injury that: 1. Requires loss of time from work beyond the remainder of the shift on which the injury occurred. 2. Results in permanent disability, total or partial, i.e., permanent loss or permanent disability of any portion or function of the body. 3. Results in fatality. The division recorded 3 sub-major injuries dur ing 1953 compared with 7 during 1952. A sub major injury is one that requires no loss of time from work other than the remainder of that shift during which the injury occurred but does not result in impairment or interference with regular duties by reason of: 1. Continued hospital visits or other major medical or surgical attention. 2. Serious or semi-serious physical results such as broken bones, dislocations, infec tions, etc. 3 Interference with regular duties through lowered efficiency, lighter work, shorter hours, special jobs, sitting down work, etc. Under the minor and sub-minor injury classifi cations the decrease in injuries was equally im pressive. During 1953 there were 34 minor in juries and 462 sub-minor injuries recorded, com pared with 66 minor injuries and 774 sub-minor injuries during 1952. A minor injury is one that requires 3 or more visits to the Medical Center but does not cause loss of time from work nor interference with regular duties other than time required for first aid treatment. A sub-minor in jury is one that is pronounced O.K. upon the first or second visit of the patient to the Medical Cen ter.
