Absent when this photograph was made were Mrs. Inez Grooms, Mrs. Grace Greer, Mrs. Myrtle Kitchen, Mrs. Dicie Waters and Mrs. Canna Woodfin. medical care for the people of Transylvania Coun- Before Ecusta was established, the Lyday Me morial Hospital, Inc., was operating in a rented residence, which was the only structure available at that time. A small building fund had been ac cumulated in the hope that some day a new build ing could be constructed. After Ecusta began op erations in 1939, and an influx of people began in the area, it became imperative that the com munity have better hospital facilities. Mr. Straus became very much interested in a new hospital and he offered his services to the Board of Trustees—serving as chairman of the Building Fund Committee and later chairman of the Building Committee. During the drive for funds, Mr. Straus pledged the company to match, dollar for dollar, the contributions of the em ployees. In the spring of 1942, when the hospital build ing had been completed, approximately $106,000 had been raised, with the Duke Endowment giv ing around $34,000, and Ecusta employees and the CONTINUED . . . Transylvania County now has one of the most modern and best equipped ..hospitals ..in the South. Martha Ann Coats, RN, is shown op erating the new auto- calve, which . sterilizes all instruments and sup plies. A. E.
