Company giving $25,000. The remainder con tributed by some 3,000 local individuals and businesses. At the time of the construction of the original hospital, it was realized that additional space would be needed in the very near future, so plans were drawn so that a wing could be added to the existing building. Facilities in the original wing were also made large enough at that time to take care of additional rooms. On the occasion of Mr. Straus’ 60th birthday, a group of his friends, Mr. T. N. Word, Mr. Robert Hanes, Mr. Walter Schwartz and Mr. Walter Lan- deck, donated $1,500 to the hospital which they requested to be put into a special fund to be called the Harry H. Straus Fund, and that the income from it be used for some hospital purpose. Later, in 1951, the Medical Care Commission notified the hospital that there was money avail- Above: Mrs. Grace Green, RN, (left) and Mrs. Inez Groom, RN, are shown preparing one of the rooms for a patient. The Commission gave the Board of Trustees only 60 days in which to raise the amount. The Build ing Fund Committee immediately went to work. Ecusta employees contributed $17,000; a gift of $5,000 was received from the Straus Foundation; over $25,000 was given by local citizens, busi nesses and friends of Mr. Straus. Through the ef forts of Mr. John Hanes, Ecusta’s president, a gift of $17,000 to match the contributions of em ployees was received, as was an additional grant of $11,765 from the Olin Industries, Inc. Char itable Trust to complete the amount to be raised in the county. Increased building costs and furnishings made it necessary for the Board of Trustees of the hos pital to borrow an additional $18,000 in 1953. This came to the attention of Messrs. John and Spencer Olin, who made another gift of $20,000, with the understanding that $4,500 would be used to construct a parking lot in the rear of the hos pital and the remaining $15,500 would be applied on the indebtedness. This leaves the hospital with a debt of only about $3,500. We are all vitally interested in the health and welfare of ourselves, our families and friends in the community, as is evidenced by our financial and material support to the local hospital on many occasions in the past decade. It is an institution of which we can be proud. This is your hospital. The staff is at your service. 6
