CASTING By Jim Stribling "B“ SHIFT CASTING By Thomas Hooper Since there has been no re port from Casting Day Crew in previous months for The Echo, we are attempting a column in this month’s issue and hope to continue in order to inform our friends and fel- low-workers of the news of interest in our department. Recently two new members have joined our crew; and we welcome them. They are Ray Gro gan and Bill Talley, both having worked in the Paper Division before transferring to our depart ment. Both fellows seem to be enjoying their work with us. Vacationing at present are Ed Warren and Luther Shipman. Reports from them assure us that they are taking good advantage of their time off. Consequently, they both decided to go fish ing at the same time, and Ed thought he had a big one, but surprisingly enough, it wasn’t a fish, but Luther on the hook. A good suggestion is: If you’re going to take a vacation, leave the coun try. Cool days and nightly frosts are worrying early gardeners. Most all the early corn and beans were badly damaged; however. Shorty Davis has enough to supply the dept. How about it. Shorty? We are happy to have all the sick ones back. James Wyatt has just recuperated from an infect ed eye and throat which prevented his presence for about three weeks. Luther will be back soon for his job. Arthur Moore was called home last week be cause of sickness. We are glad his children are better and out of the hospital. We really miss Arthur when he isn’t around. It makes things dif ficult, even to the mixing; however, Ralph Cook does a grand job, but he is replacing Ed. Our softballers really have enthusiasm. We have won our first game and are trying for the Champs. We’ll let you know next month about our wins. April showers are supposed to bring May flowers but this time it has brought cold weather and frost. For Earl Garren it brought a fine 6 lb. 10 oz. boy. So our heartiest congratulations to him and his wife. Earl said it didn’t matter whether it was a boy or a girl, but I don’t believe his chest would have been out quite so much if it had been a girl. The month of May might not have brought Dick Landreth flowers, but it brought him a new V-8 Dodge. We are all hoping now that he will take us for a ride. For John Thomas, it brought a trip to Chatta nooga on his 5 days off. We understand he had a nice trip. Cecil Smith says that May might bring flowers for some, but for him it brings tall grass which he, unfortunately, has to mow every few days. For Carl Watson, it brought a white-faced calf and additional work for him to do on his barn. He says it’s nice to have the calf but bad to have to work so hard on the barn for it. Bill Murray wants to know how late you have to wait to plant your garden. May frosts brought disaster to his garden, I think. Better luck next time. Bill. For Clyde Galloway, it brought softball and an injured foot. He seems to be much better but I bet he’ll not run so fast next time. Fred McCall had much better luck with May. I hear he is getting a new TV set. Hope he’ll in vite us out to watch it. Guess that’s all for this month, but we’ll be back with more news for you next month. Here’s hoping we all have a safe and happy time till then. Here are some of the unusual names for towns that you will find on the North Carolina map; Gold Point, Granite Quarry, Iron, Mineral Springs, Silverdale, Brasstown, Bricks, Coalville, Glass, Kao lin, Talc Mountain and Terra Cotta. "C" SHIFT CASTING By Charles Warren News is hard to get from the "C” Shift boys in Casting. They just won’t tell us what they do at all. Maybe some of their wives would like to send some news in for The Echo. If so, we sure would like to have it. We would like to welcome Curtis Banther to our shift. He has transferred to Casting from the Chemical Building. Well, seems like everyone is fishing these days. Some trout fishing, some lake fishing and some even deep-sea fishing. Wish someone would bring in some pictures of the fish they catch for The Echo. Bring pictures of the smaller ones. Those big fish stories are hard to believe anyway. Bob Foster spent last week-end in Florida, deep- sea fishing with some of the boys in the Chem ical Building, or did they say fishing? 19
