AGRICULTURAL CHEMICALS Mathieson today is a major factor in synthetic fertilizers; and agricultural specialties, which are produced in six of the Corporation’s plants. The production of high analysis pelletizsd fer tilizers v/as pioneered in the United States by Mathieson. These concentrated materials contain twice as much or more of the most needed plant foods—nitrogen, phosphate, and potash—as ordi nary fertilizers. The Corporation has repeatedly increased the capacity and rate of production of its Pasadena, Tex., plant to meet the demand for these fertilizers. For those farmers who prefer them, Mathieson also makes standard mixed fertilizers, in which the plant food ingredients are blended together mechanically. For use where balanced fertilizers are not needed, the company produces other soil- improving ,chemicals, such as superphosphates ammonium phosphate, sulphate of ammonia, sul phur, anhydrous ammonia and nitrate of soda One of the newest methods of adding nitrogen to the soil is through direct application of ammonia. Mathieson has a strong position in this growing field. A variety of insecticides, fungacides, herbicides and seed disinfectants are compounded and mar keted by the company. PHARMACEUTICALS AND RELATED PRODUCTS The merger in 1952 with E R. Squibb & Sons, one of the world’s leading and most highly re garded drug and pharmaceutical houses, gave the Corporation a firmly established position in the drug manufacturing field. Operating as a separate division of Mathieson, Squibb manufactures and markets four general classes of products: (1) antibiotics, (2) nutri tional products, including vitamins and hematinics, (3) medical specialties, and (4) household drug products. The major portion of Squibb’s output in 1953 was comprised of the first three of these groups, the so-called "ethical” drugs, which are sold prin cipally on prescription or for the use of members of the medical, dental, and veterinary professions. These products include nutritionals, biologicals, glandular products, anaesthetics, pharmaceutical specialties, and such chemotherapeutic agents as isoniazid for treatment of tuberculosis, and pro caine amide, a cardiac arrhythmic. Squibb is one of the largest manufacturers of antibiotics, includ ing penicillin, streptomycin and dihydrostrepto mycin. Most of the anaesthetic ether used in the United States today is produced in the Squibb laboratories. In the household products classification, Squibb manufactures and markets such familiar items as aspirin, sodium bicarbonate, mineral oil, milk of magnesia, dental cream, tooth brushes and shav ing cream. This is a brief picture of Mathieson today. The Corporation is a diversified, yet well integrated, producer of basic and intermediate chemicals for industry and of a growing number of finished products for agriculture and the public.
