Among these is "THE CONQUEST OF EVEREST” by Sir John Hunt. The conquest of Mount Everest, announced on the very day of the Coronation of Queen Eliza beth II, has captured the imagination of the en tire civilized world. "In the human terms of physi cal effort and endurance alone,” the Duke of Edin burgh writes of this achievement, "it will live in history as a shining example to all mankind.” i/f Hillary and Tensing return triumph antly to Camp IV, the advance base, after their successful assault on M.ount Everest. The brave men were aided by equipment and cloth ing planned ivith the greatest of care to withstand the harsh condi tions of the foreboding peak. The successful scaling of the mighty mountain was the result of temnivork both before and on the expedition. Before undertaking the expedition, special textiles were de veloped and tested to meet the rigorous conditions found on Mount Everest. Every detail of equipment was worked out in advance to aid the climbers. Cover sheets were made from a rubberized cotton to serve as protection for the climbing gear. 11
