OFFICE BITS By Alex Duris Once more we enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday. I wonder how many of us really pause to count our blessings and give thanks for them??? Or do we just consider it an other holiday to be enjoyed without giving thought to the hardships and the courage of the Pilgrims who strove so mightily to establish a new home, in a new world? Were we faced with similar hardships, would we come through as well as they did? Mus ing a bit over long, long ago but it does raise questions. Carolyn C. McCall, (Mrs. T. R. McCall,) is the new young lady working in the Purchasing De partment. She comes to us from Hendersonville, via Greensboro, N. C., her home. Welcome Caro lyn! At the outset, it may well be a good idea to re mark that the girls must have used up their vaca tions on the beaches this summer as very few en joyed vacations this past month. The men saved up some of theirs for hunting, puttering around the house, and a bit of fishing. Harvey Souther took a quickie trip to Greens boro, arriving there in the wake of Hurricane Hazel. By co-incidence, yours truly arrived in Greensboro ahead of Harvey while the waters were still swirling, and trees cluttered the highways. Harvey continued on to Raleigh for the Duke- Army game. L. C. and Frances (Hicks) Poor, vacationed in Florida, visiting in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Ft. Pierce and St. Petersburg. They had an enjoyable time but missed out on the surf bathing as it was a bit too cool at the time they were there. Leonard Bauer and Harry Dreyer visited Charleston, S. C., not long ago to inspect the port facilities there. They found the port facilities very good. Sailings from Charleston to world ports have increased tremendously in recent years, offer ing a wide range of services to the exporter and importer. Lois Roberts used up her final installment of her vacation by staying home and resting up. Carl Stephens was out for a while on the sick list. Back again in the saddle! Charley Dunlop enjoyed a late October vacation learning how to relax and taking life easy. He learned so well, that it was quite a job for him to forget what he learned and face reality again! Ola Gooch was on the sick list for a few days but back again on the job. Vacation time is over for John Redmond. His second vacation period was used up by taking a trip over the Blue Ridge Parkway and rambling around Hendersonville. Velma Bryson is back with us at her old stand in the billing department. Glad to have you back with us again! Clyde Orr walked in the other day, a civilian! He has doffed his Air Corps uniform for a neat grey suit. We were glad to have seen you again! J. D. Finch off on a vacation trip to Memphis, Tennessee! We will have to wait until he gets back to learn from him what he did. George Taylor vacationed in the eastern part of the state at the time that Hazel was cutting capers there. Part of his time was spent in the Great Dismal Swamp. George said that he never knew the wind could blow so hard! William (Bill) Hannan enjoyed a partial vaca tion early in November. Elder Brown changed his sport from fishing to a bit of hunting. He went squirrel hunting, bagged a few and not bragging too much. He does a lot better at fishing! Franklin, N. C., claimed John Holbrooks atten tion for a vacation. He spent most of his time looking over the old home town and getting re acquainted. You know, life is pretty funny after all. For in stance, the young folks get into a model A or equivalent and try to burn up the road as fast as the old crate will go. On the way, they pass some doddering old folks in a Cadillac with 260 horse power under the hood dwadling along at 30 miles an hour! The fair thing to do would be to trade cars!!! ! rOTHER SIDE TH' TRACKS By Gene Eggert Here’s deadline again. How’d it git here s’fast? Lucky we got vacations to call on for news. Looks like a bunch of them were had in October. Doug Brown says he saw an African lion cub at Cherokee on his tour through the Smokies. Hilda and Marshall Hunnicutt did the historic spots in Atlanta, Ga., an’ also saw a football game. Marcus Laws says he had him a big time in St. Augustine, Florida. Freddie and Bill toured the historic spots in and around Washington, D. C., and oh yeah; saw a football game too. Big One! U. G. Batson got a lot of things done around— the house—says he has had a better time on vaca tions. Dr. Levy tended the homestead while his wife visited the folks in good ole Chicago. She got into some of that rain storm too. Just like I said, Jim Rickards had a big time at Daytona Beach, Florida. Dr. Bryant had an enjoyable visit with his wife’s folks. Yers truly really enjoyed the jaunt to the ole home town. The place is sher changing and grow- CONTINUED . . . 23
