WINCHESTER PRODUCTS
SOLD IN TRANSYLVANIA
FOR OVER 50 YEARS
TYTINCHESTER products have been sold local-
ly for over 50 years, according to J. M. Ali
son, owner of Farmers Supply Company in Bre
vard. The Winchester cartridge board that he has
displayed in his window, and for which he has
been offered a sizable sum, was first issued in 1897.
This board contained 182 different sizes and types
of rifle and pistol ammunition, and paper and
brass shotgun shells, ranging from 4 to 20 gauge.
This board, along with other Winchester pro
motion material, was acquired by Mr. Allison some
30 years ago when he purchased the old Miller
Hardware Company. This material has been dis
played in his store [since that time. The missing
cartridges, which have been lost over the years,
were .56-50, .56-46, .45 S & W, .50 Pistol, .35
M & H, .56-56, and No. 8 Winchester brass shot
shells.
The Winchester Repeating Arms Company of
New Haven, Connecticut was purchased in 1931
by the late Franklin W. Olin. Winchester was
passing through troubled times at the depression s
lowest ebb, but after it was purchased by Mr.
Olin and became a part of Western Cartridge
Company, it was re-established in the production
of both ammunition and firearms. Using West-
