There are two types of dies. One is the T- shaped die which is used for flat film and from which the film is drawn into a tank of water for cooling, through a tension control device and to a wind-up machine. The other type is a cir cular or tubular die from which lay-flat tubing is extruded. Polyethylene flat film is produced at Pisgah Forest in gauges from .0015” to .006” and in widths from IV2” to 103”. Tubing is produced in gauges from .0015” to .004” and in lay-flat widths from 6” to 38”. As an added service for the customers, flat film and tubing are produced with a special surface treatment to receive ink in the printing process. Some polyethylene film is now printed by our customers with full color reproduction. USES Polythylene film as used in the packaging field has many applications some of which are frozen foods, fresh produce, dehydrated milk, sea foods, dry goods, candies, soaps, silverware and hardware. It is used in other trades for the manufacture of garment bags, shoulder covers, dust protectors, hosiery and cosmetic bags, furniture covers, seed bed covers, case and drum liners, etc. The future of polyethylene film is assured both in pioneering new uses and in taking over some uses for which other films are less well adapted or are higher in price. r.
