School Faces
Promising Future
In 1927 there were two colleges
in Asheville - the Buncombe
County Junior College and the
College of the City of Asheville.
The first was established by the
county school board and the lat
ter by the city school board. These
colleges were free institutions for
three years, then a financial crisis
closed down the city college and
the county college was forced to
charge tuition. This county college
was then called Biltmore Junior
College.
In 193l a board of trustees was
selected for the college. The fac
ulty turned over its control to
these trustees: A charter was se
cured under the name of Biltmore
College.
In 1936, the name became Ashe-
ville-Biltmore College and the
control passed to the Asheville
City School Board. At the same
time the city administration be
gan to give financial aid and the
college became permanent.
In 19"n the state legislature al
lowed the city and county govern
ments to help support the college.
From 1934 to 1940 the college
vas housed in the south wing of
^avid Millard and from 1940-42
1 Asheville College. In 1942 the
allege moved to Merrimon Ave
ne which was formerly a part of
he Children’s Home.
In July, 1949, the Board of Di-
rtors launched a development
nd campaign to secure funds
r the purchase of the Overlook
tate and additional acreage on
nset Mountain.
The Overlook site was available
1 the College for $125,000, of
