Faculty Senate Receives Chancellor’s
Draft of New Tenure Document
Citing constraints
of time. Chancellor
William E. Highsmith
distributed copies of
his draft of a new
faculty tenure docu
ment to the Faculty
Senate at a special
meeting, Tuesday Nov.
4.
Dr. Highsmith said
the document was a
"combination of the
acceptable portions"
of previous tenure
documents drafted by
various committees.
The Chancellor said
the statement should
only be considered
advisory until appro
ved by UNC-A's Board
of Trustees and then
the Board of Govern
ors.
Highsmith addres
sed 18 members of the
Faculty Senate and
several guests at a
meeting called to or
der by Faculty Senate
Chairman Shirley
Browning at 4:10. The
Chancellor said that
UNC-A has been working
on a tenure document
since 1973. A state
ment was approved in
December of that year
but the Board of Gov
ernors requested new
statements from all
16 campuses in light
of their new Code, a-
dopted in July of 1975.
An ad hoc faculty
committee had been
working on a new
statement until last
week. According to
the committee's chair
man, Dr. Phil Walker,
the committee's re
port was given to the
Chancellor Oct. 16.
Monday, Oct. 27, the
Chancellor disbanded
the committee, saying
the committee report
was "not satisfactory"
and "not in compli
ance" with guidelines
set by the General
Administration in
Chapel Hill and the
Code.
The Chancellor dis
tributed his new doc
ument requesting sug
gestions from the full
faculty. He said he
is looking "for opp
ortunities of improve
ment" from the faculty
When asked whether
the faculty is in a
position to approve
or disapprove the doc
ument, or "will you
do as you see fit".
Dr. Highsmith said he
will do "as I see
best."
The tenure docu
ment consists of the
regulations regard
ing reappointment,
promotion, and the
granting of tenure to
faculty. The Chancel
lor said the document
provides "for adequate
and proper faculty par
ti ci pation."
The document was to
be distributed to the
full faculty Wednesday,
Nov. 5. It wil,l be ap
proved by the Board of
Trustees Nov. 26, and
presented to the admin
istration in Chapel
Hill by Dec. 15.

Solar Outhouse
Works Well
(CPS)--The world's
first solar-powered
outhouse was installed
recently near the
northeast entrance of
Yellowstone National
Park. The installa
tion uses electricity
produced by the sun to
run the pumps that
flush the toilets.
Although the out
house looks like any
park privy at first
glance, more than 1500
solar cells are housed
in a pair of panels 12
1/2 feet long by 3
feet high.
The Forest Service
picked the panels be
cause they were less
expensive than running
a power line to the
isolated outhouse
perched on a 9190 foot
overlook.
