Tour
A
Success
Over the Christmas holidays
from December 28 to January 8,
the University of North Carolina
at Asheville sponsored “A Gaslight
Tour of London” reminiscing the
romantic Victorian England of
Charles Dickens’ time. For the
nine people who went on the trip,
the experience was memorable ~
but not in the way that you might
think! For starters, England was
experiencing its worst winter since
1916 and the bitter cold and deep
snow hampered sightseeing. Also,
several of London’s attractions
were closed to the weatlier.
A snowy England wasn’t as roman
tic as it sounds. Perhaps “The
Dickens’ Hard Times Tour of Lon
don” would have been more apt
than “ A Gaslight Tour of London.
Fortunately, the trip wasn’t a
total waste, for the group under
the direction of Dr. Richard Reed
of U.N.C.-A.’s Literature Depart
ment did get to visit some of
Dickens’ favorite restaurants and
pubs, as well as the ancient city of
Batn 'and medieval Hampton
Court. Tlie group also saw several
excellent tlieatre productions, in
cluding “Canterbury Tales” and
Oliver.” In addition, members of
the tour were able to visit Lon
don’s cathedrals, Dickens’ home
and Dickens’ Museum, or just to
do some shopping in London
stores. Indeed, “A Gaslight Tour
of London” was an unusual ex
perience.
