CHESS CLUB
Attention chess players! The Asheville Chess
Club and UNC-Asheville announce their joint
sponsoring of a chess tournament to be held on
Saturday, September 26 in the UNC-A cafeteria.
The tournament will be played in quads (four
person groups) in which each person will ply one
game against each of the other three. The entry
fee is $5 and trophies will be awarded to the
winners of each of the quads. All levels of
players, from beginner to expert are invited and
encouraged to participate. We will do our best
to compose each quad of players of approx
imately equal strength. Observers are also in
vited at no charge. The tournament will be
directed by Jim Hardy, a senior chemistry major
at UNC-A.
United States Chess Federation membership is
required for all rated chess tournaments in the
U.S. Membership is open to anyone with
benefits which include: the right to play in any
USCF-rated chess tournaments, anywhere in the
U.S.; a subscription to the nationally published
magazine, CHESS LIFE: eligibility for a national
chess rating: and member discounts from the
USCF catalog of chess books and equipment.
Annual dues for USCF membership is ordinarily
$20, but if you join at the tournament you get
the Asheville Chess Club’s 20 percent discount,
i.e. $16 for one year's membership.

October 17: details for this and other tour
naments will be forthcoming.

ATTENTION ENGINEERS
A degree requirement for all engineer
ing students is Engineering Graphics, a
two-semester hour course normally
taken in the freshman year. Here at
UNC-A a student may fulfill this require
ment by taking two quarter courses at
A-B Tech, Drafting 101 and 102. Draf
ting 101 is being offered during the Fall
quarter at night with classes beginning
September 9. If you are a freshman or
sophomore engineering studnet and
have not taken these courses and plan
to take Drafting 101 this Fall, please

CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES
This series is pan of the Cultural and Special
Events Committee at UNC-A's season of events
and entitles students from any school of any age
to attend free. Performances are held in Lipin-
sky Auditorium at 8 p.m.
UNIVERSITY SINGERS
The University Singers is a new group on
campus this year. It was designed
specifically for university students and
the repertoire selected will be of the
traditional college glee club nature. The
new group, under the capable direction
of DeWitt Tipton, of the music depart
ment adjunct faculty, will perform a
variety of works. Tipton plans to take
the group on tour to other campuses
and, it is hoped, eventually to other
states and countries. Students may par
ticipate either on a credit (one each
semester for a total of eight) or non
credit basis.

WORLD PEACE DAY
CELEBRATION ‘81
The Ashevllle-Buncombe County Baha’i
communities and the UNC-A Baha’i
Club will Join with Baha’is around the
world in celebrating the 22nd annual
observance of World Peace Day on Sun
day, September 20th on the quad at
UNC-A.
Baha’is believe that in this age we can
best serve Cod and mankind in support
of endeavors that work to unite the
peoples of the world.
The World Peace Day program will In
clude a bring-your-own picnic lunch,
musical entertainment, and an interna

The Homebuilders Association of

Buyers School on Thursday, September
