BUDGET
APPROVED
A Student Government fall
budget of $13,432.50 was approv
ed at the Senate meeting held Sept.
10 in Lipinsky Student Center.
Finance Commissioner Rickie Bell
noted that the figure is approx
imately $ 1,000 more . than the
amount granted by the Campus
Commission. She said the difference
would probably be made up by pro
fits made from S.G.-sponsored
social events.
She said the S.G. dance held Fri
day, Sept. 5, would have shown a
profit of $ 174 if someone had put
put a cement block through a
cafeteria window. The cost of
replacing the window will come out
of S.G. funds, she said.
Ms. Bell also said she plans to ask
for$2,000 more from the Campus
Commission, which allocates funds
to campus organizations, when it
meets Sept. 19. She said the com
mission has $5,000 in funds left over
from previous allocations.
Seven senators attended the
meeting.
The Senate will meet again at
2:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24.

The Chancellor believes that
UNC-A will be given high priority in
the distribution of funds. Only
North Carolina Central University
in Winston-Salem has a worse
asbestos problem.
According to Chancellor
Highsmith, in two weeks' an
asbestos task force will visit UNC-A
to access the cost of repair and
determine the first steps of correc
tive action.
The Chancellor said UNC-A
should receive enough money for
the science building and possibly a
small area in the gym which contains
asbestos.
The date for beginning the repairs
is still unknown.
The University has future plans to
renovate Lipinsky Student Center
for use by the Continuing Education
Department. This renovation would
include removal of the asbestos ceil
ings.
At this time there appears to be
no immediate or definite solutions
to the asbestos problem at UNC-A.
Perhaps the students, parents of
students, faculty, and staff could
participate in the effort to find solu
tions by writing their state
legislators.
