Thursday, Feb. 3, 1983 / Kaleidoscope / 7 Valentine Dance The University Program Board will sponsor a Valentines Dance on Friday, February 11, from 9 p.m. un til 1 a.m., featuring the sounds of the Fantastic Shuffle Band. Shuffle has been entertaining crowds in clubs and colleges since its forma tion in 1979. Their repetoire in cludes such favorites as The Gap Band, Men At Work, Loverboy, Styx, The Rolling Stones, The Fan tastic Shakers, The Cars, Devo and many more. The dance will be held in the Stu dent Center and admission will be free to UNCA students with college ID’s. Guest admission will be $5.00, and all persons must show proof of age. f » ,a-; IfPi % The Fantastic Shuffle Band will provide music for UNCA’s ’83 Valentine’s Dance, Feb. 11, from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. in the Student Center. String Ensemble in concert The University of North Carolina at Asheville String Ensemble will be performing the second concert in its 1982-83 series at Lipinsky Auditorium, Feb. 6, at 3 p.m. The UNCA String Ensemble is an all-professional group devoted to the performance of masterworks written for string orchestra. Its members include faculty from the Universtiy of North Carolina as well as out standing chamber music players and string teachers from Tennessee, South Carolina and other North Carolina university faculties, and first desk players from the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. The program will include Vivaldi’s Concerto grosso in D minor, Op. 6, no. 11, Bloch’s Concerto grosso No. 1 for Strings and Piano Obbligato, and Mendelssohn’s Octet, Op. 20. The Vivaldi work features violinists Kenneth L. Sarch and Rebekah Mor rissey, and cellist Judith Kutt as soloists. Peter Kutt will be piano soloist in the Bloch piece. Robert Hart Baker will conduct. Tickets for the UNCA String Ensemble are available in advance from the Student Center Office at UNCA. Prices are: Adults-$4, non- UNPA students and children-$2, Faculty/Staff“$3. UNCA students are admitted free of charge. Phone reservations will be accepted during business hours. Tickets will also be available at the door. The first event will be a Black Film Restival. Corhbread, Earle and Me will be shown Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. in Lipinsky Auditorium. Other events include musicians Kim and Reggie Harris, appearing in concert Feb. 18 at 9 p.m. in the Student Center. The Heath Brothers Jazz Quartet will appear Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. in Lipinsky Auditorium. Minority Education Day is Feb. 19, topped off by the Black Associa tion Dance in the Student Center from 9:30 p.m. - 1 a.m. Minority Education Day is for prospective black students and their parents who are interested in learning more about UNCA. For more information about Minority Education Day, call Mary Linney in the Admissions Of fice at 258-6480. The film Malcolm X rounds out the month. Show times are Feb. 27 at 6:30 and 9 p.m. and Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. For more information about the events taking place during Black Awareness Month, call the Student Center Office at 258-6584. (Iniversity Program Board Are you interested in helping to plan and present activities on cam pus? If so, the University Program Board needs you. In the past, only a handful of students have partici pated in planning and presenting the activities on campus. We would like to have more student involve ment in the future. For more infor mation on the UPB, please pick up our brochure at the information desk in the Student Center lobby and contact Jerry Richman in the Program Coordinator’s Office, Room 36 in the Student Center. UPB needs people to represent the entire student body so that we can provide entertainment that appeals to everyone. The UPB has just published its first spring semester “Events” calendar in poster form. “Events” is available in the Student Center lobby and at various other locations on campus. “Events” contains all forms of entertainment on campus including UPB sponsored activities, cultural performances. Chamber Music Series, and Music and Theatre Department performances. The poster is free and students are encouraged to pick one up for their personal use.
