Thursday, April 19, 1984/Kaleidoscope/3 Former Montreat skipper New baseball coach named snorts By Dale McElrath . UNGA is gearing up for the move to the Big South Conference with the addition of three coaching positions to the athletic department staff this week. Last Thursday, a news conference was held to announce the hiring of Ken Bagwell to lead the new UNCA baseball squad. Bagwell, 33, has been the head coach of Mon treat Anderson College for the past two years. During his tenure at Montreat, Bagwell turn ed the Cavalier's pro gram around from a dis mal 5-20 ' in his first season, to a respect able 12-10 this year. Bagwell hopes he can do the same at UNCA. "I'm very excited about starting baseball at UNCA," said Bagwell. "I know a lot of the talent in the area and its obvious this area is second to none." Bagwell graduated fxsia jNorth Buncombe High School and attend ed Clemson University, where he led the ACC in hits and doubles during the 1972 season. He played profession ally in the Chicago W/hite Sox system, be fore becoming Em assis tant coach at Clemson. "I know people in Asheville will respond to their first college baseball team," Bagwell said. The team will begin playing during the 1984-85 season and com pete in the Big South. As with other men's sports, the Bulldogs will play a dual NAIA/ NCAA schedule next spring before moving to the NCAA the next sea son. The other two. new coaches aren't addi tions to the Athletic Department staff, but already existing fac ulty members taking on new duties. Bob Daughton, head of UNCA's Physicial Edu cation Department, will be taking the helm of the golf team next year. Daughton was the head coach of UNCA's link- sters from 1965-1978 when the program was, discontinued. Like the baseball program, the golf team will compete under dual NAIA/NCAA status next year, before converting to , NCAA in the 1985-86 school year. "I'm excited about having golf at UNCA again," Daughton said. "Even though it will be like a new program a- gain. We have some great golf-playing schools in the (Big South) Conference and we'll be looking to start filling a team that can fit right in. We're wide open to prospective players." Bob Hartman, the former head basketball coach at UNCA, will take on the new cross Forecourt forehand: Neils De Johng chases down this shot during recent match at varsity courts. "However we'll be looking at milers and other long distance runners this spring. Wdre wide open to interested student athletes, and will pro bably have to look to mainly freshmen and junior college trans fers right away." Photo by David Plunkett By Dale McElrath Sports Editor Well, what's going on in the world of sports this week? I guess the big news is the beginning of the eternal NBA playoff season. So, since my bril liant choices for the NCAA title went slight ly awry. I've decided to try again with the NBA. First, the Eastern Division. This season's addi tion of Dennis Jphnson to the potent attack of the Boston Celtics has made the Celtics the best team 'in the league. Boston's starting front line of Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Cedric "Cornbread" Max well aren't smooth, flowing players. But if the three make the Celtics ungraceful it also makes them un stoppable. Philadelphia is also very tough, but injur ies to key players like Maurice Cheeks and Moses Malone make the 76'ers a long shot to repeat last year's title. The Milwaukee Bucks also have a chance to take the title, but I don't think Sidney Moncrief and Company really have the "right stuff" this year. In the West, the Los Angeles Lakers are per- rennial contenders. If only because of the big guy in the middle. Jabbar would make playoff contenders of the Indiana Pacers, and that would almost take a miracle. Jabbar is a winner, but I don't think so in this year's tournament. Phoenix, Portland and Seattle all are fine teams -- but they aren't really in the same league as the Celtics or the Lakers. My choice to take the NBA crown....Boston in five. +***»******* The UNCA athletic banquet is scheduled for Fri., April 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the cafe teria. Fhe meal will cost five dollars per person. If you're interested, you need to make your reservations by Monday. Call the Athletic De partment at 258-6459. The awards will cover all six sports.
