Wednesday. Sept. 5. 1984/THg BLUE BANNBH/2 -EDITORIAL- WHAT'S IN A NAME ? For several months a movement has been afoot to change the name of UNCA's campus news* paper. Rumblings of its march grew loud at the close of Spring '84 semester, and louder still during this past summer. Numerous reasons were cited for choosing a name other than Kaleidoscope. Students com plained that the name was hard to speU. Faculty thought it sounded "artsy, non-newspa- perish and unprofessional." Administrators wanted a name that better reflected the campus. In addition, several Asheville area busi nesses are called Kaleidoscope, among them an entertainment booking agency and a shop. However, there were good reasons for keep ing the name. After two years it was familiar to everyone on campus. Some even liked it. Among the newspaper staff there was an under standable loyalty to the name they had served under for several semesters. But in the end we decided it was now or never for a new name. Much at UNCA is changing with our new chancdlor. If the newspaper enter ed the new era as Kaleidoscope it should reason ably retain the name for a long time. With the march for change continuing, that seemed unlikely. So, after much ddiberation, we chose to call our publication THE BLUE BANNER. Blue is one of our school colors. Banner is a newspaper name that goes well with blue. It is our hope that this banner will wave long in ser vice to UNCA's community. This year SGA has set a goal of serving the students in any capacity which will make their experience at UNC- Asheville more productive. If we may be of any help to you or your organization please don' hesitate to call us. As the fall semester begins I sense fun, excitement, challenges, learning and growth at our institution. Last semester the Lady Bulldogs started a spirit of victories and championships which we all were proud to be a part of. Our newly appointed Chancellor, Dr. David Brown, has also expressed his eagerness to see victores at UNCA. His perspective of "student involvement" was demonstrated the first week of school. He gathered several students to prform a skit before North Carolina legislators meeting at the Asheville City Club. Te skit illustrated the need of, and requested funds for, a graduate library. In another meeting with students he shared his openness to students' opinions and concerns. As students we need to let our voice be heard, whether it's about the high prices of books, the food served in the cafeteria, or other issues at hand. As the Lady Bulldogs have reached victories, we too can achieve our goals. Right now SGA needs representatives on the following committees: Campus Commission, Publications Board, Faculty Senate, Traffic Appeals, Recreation and Intramurals, and Cultural and Special Events. Students are also needed in both Executive and Judicial positions. If you would like to know more about these committees or how you can get involved, please drop by the SGA offices in the Highsmith Student Center. We are looking forward to a productive year and hope you can be a part of it. Sincerely, Ken Cagle, President Student Gov eminent Association Voting Encouraged Dear Editor: Our group would like to recognize and commend Ken Cagle, the Student Government Association, and all other persons and groups involved in the voter registration drive on campus. The College Democrats are proud to be a part of this non-partisan movement. The goal is to get as many people as possible, no matter what their affiliation or beliefs, registered to vote and active in the current political process. A serious problem that needs to be addressed on the UNCA campus is the student apathy toward participation in the political process. This country offers its citizens the right to vote in one of the only truly free elec tions in the world. It is important that everyone, no matter what his be liefs, takes a part in some way. We in the College Democrats feel that the truly educated human being should take an interest in the issues of the time. We encourage all UNCA students to register to vote in the November general election; consider the candidates and issues carefully and take part in some way. Sincerely, The College Democrats UNCA 900000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000C POLICIES THE BLUE BANNER wdcomes letters to the editor.
