12/Thursday, January 31,1985/THE BLUE BANNER Coming Soon! "Blue Banner Trivic iTrap" Incident continued from page 7 ed me a paper and It was unbelievable," said Cline. Cline took the men to Vice President of Student Services Jack Davis, who ordered them to pick up the papers and leave cam- pus. One of the men identi fied himself as Karles Messick. The name fits one of the writers in the pa per, a Rev. Messick. "He got upset when asked to leave and said he re presented a legitimate church. He then told me he was on his way to UNCA.," said Cline. Messick drove a blue Volkswagen Rabbit regis tered to the church. Cline called UNCA secu rity to warn them, but the message arrived too late. The men shoved papers under windshield wipers all over campus and de parted before security got the call. Carreno said the securi ty officers picked up about 100 of the papers. Pat Cabe, student gov ernment vice president, saw two men wearing hooded camouflage jackets putting papers on cars behind the Hi^irise that afternoon. "I just thought they were fraternity guys," said Cabe. The intruders distribut ed two different issues, according to Carreno. One issue called the Santa Domingo issue dated Janu ary 1984, and the other, the White Student issue, dated December 1984. Dr. lovacchini, vice chancellor of student af fairs, called the act "de plorable." "We can*t jeopardize the freedcm of speech guaranr teed by the First Amend ment. On the other hand, they are violating uni versity policy," said Dr. Laurence Dorr, vice chan- icellor of academic oi- fairs. UNCA policy states any material distributed on caiqnjis must meet the ap proval of lovacchini or another official. "These men are not stu dents and they were not invited here. They vio lated our regulations, and that gives us the right to ban them from caoopus and remove their material," said Carreno. Cline said A-B Tech is in the process of drafting a letter to the church warning its followers not to appear again on canqpus. However, Dr. Ileana Grams, assistant professor of philosophy, said changing people’s atti tudes is the key to ending racial hatred. "There is no way to pre vent this material frcMH coining on canq>us, and I'm not sure it is our busi ness to. try to prevent it," said Grams, director of the UNCA Jewish Studies Center. "What we can do is open students' minds through a liberal educaton. It is also in^>ortant to respond to this type of material, because to ignore it is to just assume it is O.K.," said Grams.
