12/Thursday, March 28,1985/THE BLUE BANNER Art show staiKl the feeling. When you.work for years on a piece and then you see it somewhere else, it is Indescribable," said Ho gan. Hogan ripped down the figures outside, slammed through the doors, tore down another effigy, and walked through the hall knocking over decorative pots which held green lights, according to wit ness Paige Pedrie. Marcus Wall, UNCA. gradu ate, said he saw Hogan and two men "kicking and crumbling" an effigy in the bathroom. "They put a trashcan on top of the piece and made jokes about it deserving to be in the trash," said Wall. Wall said he then step ped into a stall, and heard a splashing sound. A few minutes later, he left the stall to discover "wa ter or urine dripping down the trashcan." "This is from the heart," said Hogan. "This is an absolute fabrica tion. I might pull down someone's work hut I'm not vulgar." Once in the gallery, confronted continued from page I and asked him to step outside. "He blatmtly accused me of stealing his ideas. I tried to reason with him, but he was totally ir rational. A number of times I expected physical violence," said Lowery. Lowery called Hogan's charges "absurd." "I have documented pro gression of this image for over two years," said Lowery. After an almost hour long confrontation, Hogan continued to hang about the hall, making comments about people, according to Lucy Noth, junior art ma jor. Perry Lowery, Scott's brother, and Wall followed Hogan and his friends out of the building to "make sure they did not tear another thing down." Once out sid e, however; Wall said Hogan ripped off his jacket and dared anyone to fight him. Hogan said he felt in timidated and that he was simply responding to to the provocation. Cooke said he. considered contacting the police but thought it would only "es calate the problem." Cooke said he found Ho gan's show of behavior shocking. "Hogan's work came to my attention at an October show. I found his work ag gressive and stimulating," said Cooke. Cooke contracted Hogan to design an installation for the April Celebration of the Arts for $500, as well as teach four fall classes, two in visual media and two in painting. "I was really excited about taking one of his classes but after what I saw Friday night you couldn't pay me to," said Noth. Noth and Mel Riley are designing a new instal lation in place of Ho gan ' s. "We were looking forward to working with him, but he could not survive in the academic environment. I wish him the best with his work," said Cooke. In spite of the job loss, Hogan said he did not regret the job loss. "I don't regret it. UNCA was only a trial run."
