Letters Professor enjoys Ebony Choir's first concert THE BLUE BANNER/November 6, 1986/3 I’M §URE There’& a perfectly reasonable E)CPLANAT/oN. Q §TEiN’86. MEVJ§»MEA Meeting advisors is valuable Editor, The Blue Banner, Last Sunday afternoon I had to trudge back on up to school once more to continue preparing for the week. The semester's been getting more and more hectic, and I was irritated, a bit angry, and somewhat frightened at having to increase my pace again and again just to keep up. Around 3 p.m., I heard music coming from the Carmichael Lecture Hall and went in to hear the Ebony Choir for a few minutes. When I returned to my desk an hour later, I knew why I was in the office working, and I was satisfied, refreshed and happy to do my part in what the Ebony Choir does. The singers' clearly individual voices and personalities blended and contrasted in intricate, beautiful and exciting ways, creating something that made the world better. They had obviously worked hard; they Editor, The Blue Banner, We are not automatically made responsible adults when we have reached the age of 18, but we are expected to act like it. I am about to address an issue that not only affects responsible adults, but our entire population; AIDS, a short abbreviation for a painful, terminal disease. Before you stop reading right here thinking, "This will not affect me. I am not a homosexual, bisexual, an IV drug abuser; I do not act in a promiscuous manner or frequent the services of prostitutes." Think again, it may well affect you. Can you vouch for your sexual partner(s)? Their past partners or their past actions? The incubation period for AIDS can be anywhere from a few months to several years. AIDS does- not discriminate, it does not were working hard all through their performance. Their joy in challenge and accomplishment encourages me about students, about UNCA, and about myself as a teacher and administrator. I encourage everyone out there to hear them. It's a good time of year to realize what there is to be thankful for here at UNCA. And in light of matters discussed in the Banner in recent weeks, might I note here that what the Ebony Choir did was not at all practical. They weren't practicing or displaying job skills. Their performance confirms my faith that the core of a liberal arts education is more about love and beauty than it is about paychecks and hard- headedness . Dr. Peg Downes Chairman, Literature, Language, and Communications Department care what your lifestyle is and it is spreading. There have been 25,000 known cases and 15,000 deaths reported to the Public Health Service since the first case was reported in 1981. My heart went out to all the interviewees in an AIDS documentary on television recently, especially to the man accused by his community of being a murderer. He was bisexual and his wife, who did not know, died of AIDS. The man didn't know he was a carrier. I challenge you as responsible adults to make sure you are not a link in the transmission chain. Let us take it upon ourselves to help wipe out AIDS. (AIDS hotline: 1-800-342-2437, a recording; or 1-800-447- 2437.) Anne M. Bello Junior 'Health Care"Administration';' ■ * - r r 1 - - t J , Editor, The Blue Banner, I'd like to encourage all degree-seeking students to make an appointment with their advisors now to plan for early registration for the spring semester, which will be from Nov. 10-12. This semester, advisors will give their advisees who have less than 75 hours of credit a checksheet for the all-university requirements that apply to them. This, together with a list of major requirements, will help students keep track of their progress toward a degree. Most students who have 75 hours of credit or more should receive a graduation checksheet from the registrar's office which will serve the same purpose. So besides preparing you to register early, thus avoiding the rush in January, a visit with your advisor now could provide you with a valuable tool for your academic planning. (Section 14 LI: A Class H felony shall be punishable by imprisonment up to 10 years, a fine or both.) The Blue Banner is not a publication funded by one department or the 30 members of the editorial staff. It’s funded by student fee money and the taxes every North Carolinian pays. A portion of every UNCA student’s tuition goes for student fees each semester, so it belongs to and is paid for by the entire campus commimity. So, please, if you have a gripe, write letter or come see us. But don’t abuse a publiption that’s meant for everyone’s enjoyment and use.
