THE BLUE BANNER/December 11, 1986/13 Women defeat Winthrop By Lynda Kroeger Staff Writer On Saturday night, UNCA’s lady’s basketball team defeated Winthrop college 79-76 to win their second consecutive game this season. This also enabled UNCA to get off on the right foot in conference play. The Lady Bulldogs, ranked number five in the conference, upset second—ranked Winthrop to win their first conference game. "I was thril led we pulled this one off said Coach Mary Ann Myers. "I woke up Sunday morning with a smile on my face and realized we beat a team we weren’t suppose to beat." The Lady Bulldogs went into half- time trailing 40-38, but came out aggressively at the start of the se cond, and went on a 16-2 run. During the half. Coach Myers made some defensive adjustments and encouraged the team. "I told them that if they wanted to win they would play hard," Myers said. "They needed to adjust to Winthrop. "Jamie Allen did a terrific job for us," commented Myers. Allen, a freshman, pumped in eight put of 15 shots and finished with a total of 18 points. Mechio Konrnegay also added 18 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Other UNCA players in double fi gures were Wendy Beecher with 12, Donna Spratt with 12 and Mary Mackey with 10. Spratt also contrib uted 11 rebounds. "When I played my bench they really contributed," Myers said. "I put them in and we didn’t loose anything." Coach Myers is very pleased with her team. 'We shot almost fifty percent from the floor and we look ed like a basketball team," she said. "We made some mistakes down the stretch, but we played real good defensively and we were confident." The Lady Bulldogs played Winthrop man to man, while Winthrop played a zone game. UNCA’s defense put everything together for them. "This game was the first time we played with intensity on defense," said jun ior Spratt. UNCA had picked up their first victory of the season by defeating Wofford College 71—69 on Dec. 4. In that game UNCA opened up a 47-30 halftime lead only to see Wof ford rally and close that gap to 65- 64 with a little over three minutes remaining. However, UNCA was able to get key baskets dovm the stretch fi:om Mechio Kornegay and Wendy Beecher to hold on for the victory. Beecher finished the game with 21 points, while Donna Spratt pumped in 17 and Kornegay added 14. The next game is on Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. in Raleigh when they take on North Carolina State University.
