On Saturday night, UNCA’s lady’s
basketball team defeated Winthrop
college 79-76 to win their second
consecutive game this season. This
also enabled UNCA to get off on
the right foot in conference play.
The Lady Bulldogs, ranked number
five in the conference, upset
second—ranked Winthrop to win their
first conference game. "I was thril
led we pulled this one off said
Coach Mary Ann Myers. "I woke up
Sunday morning with a smile on my
face and realized we beat a team we
weren’t suppose to beat."
The Lady Bulldogs went into half-
time trailing 40-38, but came out
aggressively at the start of the se
cond, and went on a 16-2 run.
During the half. Coach Myers
made some defensive adjustments
and encouraged the team. "I told
them that if they wanted to win
they would play hard," Myers said.
"They needed to adjust to Winthrop.
"Jamie Allen did a terrific job for
us," commented Myers. Allen, a
freshman, pumped in eight put of 15
shots and finished with a total of 18
points. Mechio Konrnegay also added
18 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Other UNCA players in double fi
gures were Wendy Beecher with 12,
Donna Spratt with 12 and Mary
Mackey with 10. Spratt also contrib
uted 11 rebounds.
"When I played my bench they
really contributed," Myers said. "I
put them in and we didn’t loose
anything."
Coach Myers is very pleased with
her team. 'We shot almost fifty
percent from the floor and we look
ed like a basketball team," she said.
"We made some mistakes down the
stretch, but we played real good
defensively and we were confident."
The Lady Bulldogs played Winthrop
man to man, while Winthrop played
a zone game. UNCA’s defense put
everything together for them. "This
game was the first time we played
with intensity on defense," said jun
ior Spratt.
UNCA had picked up their first
victory of the season by defeating
Wofford College 71—69 on Dec. 4.
In that game UNCA opened up a
47-30 halftime lead only to see Wof
ford rally and close that gap to 65-
64 with a little over three minutes
remaining.
However, UNCA was able to get
key baskets dovm the stretch fi:om
Mechio Kornegay and Wendy Beecher
to hold on for the victory.
Beecher finished the game with 21
points, while Donna Spratt pumped
in 17 and Kornegay added 14.
The next game is on Dec. 13 at 6
p.m. in Raleigh when they take on
North Carolina State University.
