14/THE BLUE BANNER/December 11, 1986 Free Agents win intramurals Cook named to All-South By Lynda Kroeger Staff Writer Despite heavy the intramural flag football championship was held on Nov. 26. The Free Agents defeated the Head Himters 12-0 to capture their third straight title and win their 21st consecutive game. Early in the second quarter, Mal colm Woody of the Free Agents in tercepted a pass thrown by Mark Simmons and scored the first touch down of the game. During the third quarter, Greg Emmett gave the Free Agents some breathing room when he caught a 45-yard touchdow?i pass thrown from Mark Brown for the final score of the game. "The score would have been higher if it wasn’t raining so hard," commented Intra mural Director Helen Carroll. Several key passes were dropped by both teams because of the muddy field and rain. During the second quarter, Simmons picked off a pitch on the Free Agents' two-yard line, but slipped and went out of boimds. This was a critical point in the game since it would have tied the score up. Mark Adams of the Free Agents had two interceptions, while Mark Simmons and Malcom Woody had three interceptions each. "It was a defensive game because the offense couldn’t do anything," commented Free Agent Mark Brown. "We were on the goal line three times and we were stopped." With lights expected for next year, the flag football season should be better than ever. "This season was short, cold and rainy," Carroll said. "We had to play some games in the dark because of women’s soccer. Despite these conditions everyone had a good time. "I had a lot of fun this y^ and would like to see more people come out *to play next year," Smunons said. "Also, it would he nice to see more spectators next year." Both teams have positive outlooks for next season. "Next year every starter will be returning," said Brown. "We expect to finish high. I hope we play as well as we did this year," said Simmons. "Maybe we’ll break their streak." By Geoff Cabe Assistant Sports Editor UNCA’s soccer program received another honor ^s past week as senior goalkeeper Larry Cook was named as the goalkeeper for the All-South third team. With neither of the goalkeepers ahead of him coming £rom the Big South Conference, Cook was a little surprised that he was not named to the Big South All-Conference team as well. "It’s a little perplexing," Cook said. "I don’t know how I could make All-South and not make All- Conference. One of the major rea sons could be , that our record against the conference was not that good," he said. Nevertheless, Cook is pleased with this honor. "It’s a prestigous honor for myself and UNCA," he said. "Finally the area is starting to recognize UNCA as a good school with a good soccer program," he continued. Cook also sees this award as be longing in part to his defensive players. "Thils award is also a pat on the back to my defense," he said. "They played well all season." The award closes the book on Cook’s career at UNCA — a career that stated when he was a walk-on four seasons ago and was named the number four goalkeeper in NAIA his freshmen year. However, Cook is giving thought to trying out professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). He sees this award helping him in that aspect. "It’s a positive step in that direc tion," he said. "I’m thinking about trying Out professionally, but I’m not sure that I would like to make a profession out of soccer as of yet," he said. "However, I don’t want to look back years later and wonder if I could have made it." Ck>ok also likes what this award can do, for UNCA’s future recruiting. "Since UNCA is starting to put a main signifigance in soccer camps, this could entice more kids into coming to these camps," he said. Need a job?
