The Bull dogs knocked off conference foe Augusta College in the first match 3-1. Mercer Uni versity fell next by a 3-0 count. The Bulldogs warmed up for their match at 12 p.m., only to wait until 3:20 p.m. to play. The officials were late in arriving. "We played really well," said Volleyball Coach Suzanne Patterson. 'Especially after we had to sit around and wait to play." Augusta pushed the Lady Bulldogs in the first game before falling 16-14. UNCA lost game two 7-15. The Bulldogs recovered to win the next two games 15-13 and 15-8. "We hit really well," said Patterson. "Kim Wieters played well off the bench. She served six straight points in game four to get us going again. Our serving was the difference in the match," said Patterson. The Lady Bulldogs took the match with Mercer in an easy fashion, winning 15-4 15-2, 15-10. "We played a very good fundamental match against Mercer," said Patterson. "We played our tempo and main tained our game. We didn’t go down to their level of play." On Thursday at 6 p.m. the Lady Bulldogs will host Rad ford University. This is a conference match which coach Patterson feels is im portant. "Radford finished second in the conference last year," said Patterson. "They beat us twice last year. This year we have a shot to beat them." Bulldogs improve record The UNCA men’s soccer team saw its record improve to 4-8 this week after a pair of wins over Lee College and Warren Wilson. On Saturday the Bulldogs hosted Lee and came away with an easy 8-1 win. UNCA outshot Lee 44-8 and com pletely dominated the match. Freshman Dan Kurtz got the Bulldogs off to a good start by scoring on an assist from junior Mike Eichner with 32:16 left in the half. The goal was Kurtz’s first as a collegian. Eichner added another as sist, this one to junior Mike Nielsen with 22:33 left in the half;^ to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Freshman Pat Britz scored on a penalty kick with 15:45 to go in the half. Senior Mike Mosley ended the scor ing in the first half on another penalty kick at the 9:53 mark. UNCA led at the half 4-0. The Bulldogs continued to dominate in the second half. Junior Aaron Glugover con nected on a penalty kick to start the scoring. Dan Kurtz added his second goal a few minutes later. Junior Mark Magee added two assists, the first to Mike { Nielsen and the next to Eichner to give the Bulldogs a 8-0 lead. Lee College added a late goal to rmn the shutout. "I was really pleased with our performance," said Komo- dowski. 'David Bass got into the game at goal and played very well," he added. It is definitely an easier part of our schedule," said Head Coach Hank Komodow- ski. "We’ve had excellent efforts against tougher oppo nents, now, with that same effort, we can get some wins to show for it," said Komo- dowski. On Wednesday the Bulldogs traveled to Swarmanoa to take on local rival Warren Wilson. The Bulldogs took this one by a score of 4-1. Junior Mike Nielsen got the Bulldogs off to a good start as he scored two goals midway through the first half to put UNCA up by a pair However, only one minute later, Warren Wilson’s Carlos Benavente scored to cut the margin to 2-L With a little over nine minutes remaining in the first, junior Mark Magee answered the Warren Wilson challenge by scoring to put UNCA up 3-0 at intermission. Magee then put the game out of reach by scoring his second goal of the game and fifth of the year with 15 minutes remaining to close out the scoring. "This was a fine win," said Komodowski. "We played very well the first half. Now we have to concentrate on Bap tist this Saturday. It’s a big game for us." The Bulldogs game against conference foe Baptist is important in that the Bull dogs need to win two of their t^ree remaining confer ence games to get into the playoffs.
