March Banner IS ly /' le le zr ki le al >4 ly :d .2 e- of e- .1 Tennis teams wait on weather to start season Shawn Culbertson Staff Writer The men’s tennis team has yet to play a full match this season because of the unpleasant weather Asheville has been experiencing over the past few weeks. The women’s team has only been able to complete a couple of matches, which were at the beginning of the season. On March 9, both teams had matches icheduled. The men were paired up with the University of North Caro lina - Charlotte, and the women were to play the University of Illinois - Chicago. The men were able to com plete one game before the matches were canceled because of the rain. The rain and snow have been a big roblem for both matches and prac tices. According to head coach Rebecca Offenbacher, the team has been very limited in what they can and can not do because of weather disturbances. While most schools are well under way with their seasons, the Bulldogs have really yet to begin. Both teams are scheduled to play this weekend. On Friday, the teams will face Winthrop University and on Satur day, and both teams will play the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. “Hopefully we can get some matches in this weekend," Offenbacher said. If the weather forecast for this week holds true, the teams will once again have to deal with rain and possibly snow. This could greatly affect the team going into the start of confer ence play on Friday. “Everyone else has already played about eight matches, so the delays are really hurting us. We haven’t been able to get on the court that much. Times are tough,” Rob Flink said. Without the proper preparation, the actual games will become that much harder. The women’s team is formed around a nucleus of young players and this missed experience could hurt them going into conference play. “We haven’t had much time to prac tice, so that’s where the rain is affect ing us. We’ve only practiced two or three times in the last week,” Jennifer Smith said. Hopefully the weather will hold off this week and the teams can get some practice done in preparation for the conference opener this Friday. Kit 24^4 23i Photo by Jennifer Thurston Easy out...
