For forty- nine years, the Craft Fair of the South ern Highlands has showcased the fin est regional craftsmanship from the mountains of nine southern states. This year, it will be held Thursday through Sunday, October 17-20, from 6-10 p.m. each day. The price of admission is $5 and includes all music, demonstrations and workshops. A lecture on Lupus will be pre sented by The Helen Powers Women’s Health Center, a program of the Mis sion + St. Joseph’s Health System, on September 17. Guest speaker is Steven L. Mendelsohn, M.D., Ph.D., of Asheville Arthritis Center. The First Night Asheville ‘96 Enter tainment Committee announces that applications are now available to area entertainers interested in performing at this year’s First Night celebration. The Mid-Atlantic Newspaper Ad vertising and Marketing Executives will award $4500 in scholarships to five deserving students interested in newspaper advertising. Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Award 1997-98 Awards are made to women for gradu ate study in aerospace-related science related engineering. Awards are not made for aviation-related study such as flying lessons or for study to be come an air traffic controller or other airline or airport personnel. Awards must be used for a course of study leading to a graduate degree (MS/Ph.D.) and for the program out lined in the application under “Aca demic Plans” and “Professional Infor mation and Goals.” Applications are accepted from May through November for award in the following academic year. Deadline to apply is November 1. For an application, contact the Finan cial Aid Office, LH221. The Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship is awarded to college jun iors for use in the senior year. Applicants must be North Carolina residents enrolled in a teacher-educa- tion program. They must be in the junior year of college and willing to teach in the public schools of North Carolina for at least two years follow ing graduation. All applications should be made through a college or university. The head of the department of education in teacher training institutions is re quested by the State NCAE President to select two juniors to receive appli cation forms. Preference will be given to children of NCAE members as part of the selection process. Other selec tion criteria will be based on charac ter, personality, scholastic achieve ment, evidence of promise as a teacher, and the financial need of the appli cant. Twelve Fellowships will be awarded for three years of full-time study to ward the Ph.D. in an area related to integrated systems of manufacturing, including, but not limited to, large scale systems and integration of prod uct design with manufacturing pro cesses. Fellowship awards provide an annual stipend of $20,000 and a cost- of-education allowance of up to $15,000. Applicants must possess a master’s degree by the beginning of the fall 1997 term, or have been admitted to a doctoral program prior to the fall 1997 term, or have professional in dustrial experience equivalent to a master’s degree. Applicants must intend to work to ward a Ph.D. degree at an academic institution that offers Ph.D. degree program, in which study related di rectly to an integrated approach to manufacturing can be pursued. Attention Poets The National Library of Poetry has announced that $48,000 in prizes will be awarded this year to over 250 poets in the North American Open Poetry Contest. The deadline for the contest is September 30, 1996. The contest is open to everyone and entry is free. Any poet, whether previously pub lished or not, can be a winner. Poets from the Asheville area have success fully competed in past competitions. Every poem entered also has a chance to be published in a deluxe, hardbound anthology.
