September 19, J 996 The Blue Banner Page 7 Men even season record Sophomore forward Mackenzie Miller has control of the ball in last Frido/s game against Radford. UNCA won the game 3-2. Jennifer Thurston Sports Editor The UNCA men’s soccer team raised its season record to two wins and two losses by de feating Montreat College and Georgia Southern this week. “After losing our first two games, it feels very good to be 2-2 at this point,” said Head Coach Steve Cornish. “I feel good about the way we’re com ing around.” Senior goalie Mark Robinson earned his first shutout of the year in the game against Montreat. UNCA scored eight goals, seven of which came in the second half of the game. Mark Acquista scored two goals early in the Georgia Southern game, giving UNCA an early lead. Jenkins Powell scored an insurance goal at the end of the game, bringing the final score to 3-2. “It was a good week for our lads,” Cornish said. “We got off to a slow start against Montreat, but then played very well in the second half. The Georgia Southern win was a very good one. We now need to keep it going and keep getting better.” Volleyball team scoops home doubleheader Photo by Del DeLorm Women defeat Radford Brad Davis Staff V/riter The UNCA women’s soccer team opened conference play by defeating Radford 3-2 in overtime last Friday. “We played miserably,” said Head Coach Michele Cornish. “We didn’t really back down, we just didn’t play. We kind of sat there and watched the game go on around us.” UNCA had a 2-0 lead in the game before allowing Radford to tie the score with two goals in the second half. In over time, senior Lynae King scored the winning goal on a penalty kick. “The girls did not come into it ready to play,” said Cornish. “If we had played the way we were capable of, it certainly would not have been a 3-2 game,” said Cornish, “it prob ably would have been a 4-0 or 5-0 game.” Ashley Hart, a sophomore mid-fielder, scored the first two goals against Radford. “Ashley is one of our most consistent players, and she always does a good job,” said Cornish. With the win, UNCA im proves its record to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. “ If we continue to get better and better as the season wears on, I have high hopes for the girls,” Cornish said. Brad Davis Staff Writer The UNCA women’s volley ball team won both matches of a doubleheader on Sept. II. The Bulldogs defeated Wofford in the first game and ASU in the nightcap. We knew Wofford was not going to be strong and we knew we had a big match later that night,” said Julie Torbett, coach of the UNCA volleyball team. “We were trying to just find our groove in that match and get ready for ASU.” Torbett was pleased with the overall performance of her team. “I think that we played a very consistent match,”she aid. “We concentrated on defense, and defense wins matches. We stopped their big hitters. ASU was a big match for us. They’re not in our con ference, but we’re always com peting for recruits with them.” Senior Kimberly Osborne led the Bulldogs with 22 kills in the match against ASU. “Kim Osborne has just been our definite offensive player,” said Torbett, “the person we like to get the ball to.” Osborne got some help from her teammates, Cally Geiger with 19 kills, Lorelee Smith with 64 assists, and Courtney Tucker with 16 kills. In the first match of the doubleheader, UNCA de feated Wofford in four games. Torbett used the Wofford match as a chance to get the Bulldog bench some playing time. “I wanted to get my subs a little bit of playing experience, so in the third game I decided to go ahead and put the whole benchin,”saidTorbett. “They hung with them for a little while and then it seemed that Wofford picked it up a little bit and they ended up beating us in the third game.” There were some bright spots for the Bulldog reserves in the match against Wofford. “Beth Brown probably played the best of the reserves,” said Torbett. “She went in and had three aces against them. After the third game, Torbett replaced her bench with the starters and UNCA closed out the Wofford match. This weekend UNCA will com pete in the Campbell University InvitationalTournament in Buies Creek, N.C.
