I The Blue Banner Features HOI Gallery continued from page 4 light of neon signs. The other galleries made me won der why they were included on the list. They featured the mass-pro duced trinkets and home accesso ries, which I could just as easily buy from a Pier One Imports store. Some places did manage to com bine the shop type store with a gallery feel, such as the Artist’s Loft. They had classical bronze sculptures, pottery, paintings and jewelry, which was all very nice and pleasant, but that did not Race scream ‘ art to me. I much preferred the gallery Blue Spiral 1 with its many levels and varying artists to the stores trying to come across as both shops and art galleries. continued from page 4 to have their names printed on the t-shirts if they registered early. In dividuals who raised more money received added prizes for their ef forts. Those who raised $50 in dona tions won Jingle Bell Walk/Run gloves. Participants who raised $250 in donations received gloves, a headband, a fanny pack and a Jingle Bell Walk/Run sweatshirt. Every participant who reached the $100 level became eligible to re ceive a $ 100 gift certificate to Cir cuit City and two 2001 Super Bowl tickets. The drawing will be held on Jan. 1. The Super Bowl tickets are a tempting prize, but it was clear that community service was the real incentive of the event. It was actually a race, but the atmosphere was not competitive. The partici pants were very supportive of each other. It was not about winning the race or getting the prize. The focus was on the people that will benefit from their efforts and do nations. The race spanned a distance of 3.1 miles. The course looped around campus, and the campus police blocked off the area to traffic during the event. They provided food and drinks for the walkers and runners after the event and they gave small trophies to those who had the best times in their age group. The Jingle Bell Walk/Run is the third charity event that the UNCA Track team has participated in. They have also helped to raise funds for the Haywood County Children : Fund through the Maggie Valley Road Race. r» The Health Adventure will host the eighth arinual Cork and Flame: An Exploration of Healthy Ital ian.” The benefit dinner will be on Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the night will feature the tal ents of the Market Place restaurant and include a six course meal with four wines. Tickets are $75. For more information, contact the Health Adven ture at 254-6373, ext. 300. PHOTO BY JUSTIN MECKES Jonathan Goodman and Justin Smith participated in Open Mic Night on Nov. 8 in the Hightsmith Center Lounge at 8 p.m. Food continued from page 5 curriculum of other dance pro grams, which produce professional performers. “UNCA is about creating students who are conscious of all the arts. We are not creating performing artists, we are creating people with dimensions and interests in lots of things,” said Schrader. Food for Thought is an event that started in New York City, that still runs on a monthly basis. Food for Thought gives inde pendent performers a chance to perform their work while con tributing to society. The audi ence also benefits because they are able to attend live dance per formances affordably. The show will feature over 60 performers, while including all types of dance, from clogging to ballet. The dancers did not have to tryout for the show, therefore, an eclectic performance can be ex pected. Food For Thought is an “opportunity for (the dancers) to share what they love,” said Schrader. The performance will last ap proximately an hour and 15 min utes.
