Soccer loses two on road Ben Martin Staff Reporter The UNCA women’s soccer team lost two road games last week. The Bulldogs were defeated by Clemson University 5-0 Oct. 24, and then lost to Birmingham South ern College 2-0 Oct. 27. The loss to Birmingham South ern dropped the Bulldogs to 5-9 for the year. The Birmingham Southern Pan thers outshot the Bulldogs 26-3 in the game. The ‘Dogs were did not score in the first half, and recorded two shots on goal in the matchup. Freshman goalie Rebecca Bostian had nine saves for the Bulldogs. Birmingham Southern is currently undefeated in the Big South Con ference. This is their first year playing in the conference. Against Clemson, the Tigers outshot the Bulldogs 25-2 in the game. The Tigers also had 18 cornerkicks. Clemson is currently the 13th ranked team in the nation. Freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Bostian recorded 3 saves for the Bulldogs. UNCA will face High Point Uni versity on the road Nov. 3 in a BSC contest. It will be their last regular season game before heading to Charleston Nov. 8 through 10 for the BSC tournament. The Bulldogs began practicing Oct. 14, and have been preparing for the upcoming season. As Head Coach Kathleen Weber begins her fifth season at UNCA, she said she is looking forward to ilie 2001-2002 season. The ‘Dogs have been plagued by injuries in the past, and have re cently lost junior center Tonisha Jackson, an all-rookie performer her freshman year to a tear in h er ante rior cruciate ligament injury, hei second in nine months. “We are definitely going to miss T.J., but we have a lot of gooj players who are going to have to step up,” said Weber. “With Bienvenu back from an ACL injury during last years Blue; White game, we are really excited”, Weber said. “Ansley has a ton of talent, and a lot of weapons thi other teams are underestimating.! Sophomore small forward Billy Allen enjoyed some success last year with a 6.0 scoring average and earned All-Rookie honors in the BSC. Allen goes into the 2001-2002 season healthy and could have a breakout season. Biedenbach said 6-7 sophomore forward Michael Harper played in spots last year and had some good moments. He averaged 2.4 points per game and could be a player to watch out for this season. Two freshmen are also expected to help contribute at each forward spot. 6’5” Bryan McCullough and 6’9” Joseph Barber could have a chance to help the Bulldogs a great deal this year. UNCA did lose three-year starter Adam Earnhardt at center, but 6’11” junior center Ben McGonagil returns. McGonagil averaged 4.8 re bounds per game and led the team in free throw shooting at 81 per cent. “We’re glad to have Ben back to play at center this year,” said Biedenbach on the Atletics Web site. “He’s a power player who we need to have a good year for us to be successful.” Expected to back McGonagil up is 6’11” freshman Jon Higginbotham from Auburn High School in Auburn, Al.
