ELUSIVE GRAIL Continued From Page One through the grapevine that the respon dent was the immigrant sister of the food service manager. So much for objectivity! I quizzed one particularly fetching female regarding on-campus recrea tion outlets, and was blithely inform ed: "Most of the time I'm with my boyfriend off-campus. When we do come on weekends for social ac tivities, we usually make our own, in formally, you could say. But I rashly persevered. I asked Charles B. about living conditions in the dormitories: "What can you say about living in fallout shelters," he remarked with a surly shrug of his shoulders, an obvious allusion to the boxy, cinderblock construction of the present accommodations. When I in formed him of the new multi-million dollar dormitory complex on the way, his torso erupted in a paroxysm of shrugging, and he rasped, "I won't be here." A real rot, this Charlie B. After a few more similarly bilious en counters, I was bowed and cowed. All that remained for this writer was silent mourning over the murder of my beautiful theory by a gang of brutal freshmen . . . and a threnody for the passing of salad days. 2
