THE RUTHERFORD RECORDER 3 SPORTS RESUME OF BASE BALL SEASON The Rutherford Ramblers have just closed the xnost successful base ball season In the history of the school. When we say that this has been the best season in the history of the college, we make a broad state ment, for Rutherford has put out some teams of high calibre during the last few years. However we find ample proof of this statement when we review the spring season. Last March when Coach Weaver called for candidates for the baseball team, approximately thirty boys re sponded, most of whom had had very little experience in baseball. We can begin to realize what a severe task faced Coach Weaver when only three letter men were out for the team. He was forced to take his inexperienced material and develop a team which won the commendation of baseball fans all over this state. Although such a situation would have discour aged many coaches, it did not daunt Coach Weaver in the least, for he is widely known for .his abiliity to de velop baseball material. Coach Wea ver has recently piloted the Valdese baseball team to a championship in the Western Carolina League; also in the four years that he has been here he has put out ■three Junior College Championship teams. There were a number of high spots in the past season, one of which was the series of games with Emory and Henry College, an A grade college. During the first inning of the first game, the Emjory team scored five runs; however the Ramblers were not discouraged, but by exhibiting that (Continued on Sixth Page) CAPTAIN OTIS BUFF. Star shortstop of the Ramblers for the past three years and captain for the 1928 season just passed. Of him Coach Weaver recently remarked: “The best shortstop in college base- bal in North Carolina today.” •.-He_ will return next' year. CAPTAIN ELECT TELLIS BUMGARNER Who will captain the Rambler’s basketball team in 1928-29. One of the most dependable men on the team for the past two years, playing cen ter and stationary guard. “Bum” is also a member of the baseball team, being one of the best pitchers Coach Weaver has developed while at Ruth erford. FOOTBALL The Ramblers began the 1927 foot ball season ball season without any veteran material on hand and estab lished a good record with a very diffi cult schedule. No captain having been elected from the preceding year, it was not aintil after the season started that Jim Caldwell, of New berry, S. C., was chosen to fill the post. Jim played right tackle and proved to be a capable leader. Rutherford 30—Boiling Springs 0. Rutherford began the season by ov erwhelming Boiling Springs at Ruth erford by thirty points. The entire squad showed up well, and Pickelsi- mer’s running was spectacular. Rutherford 6—Emory and Henry 34. Our next engagement was at Em ory, Virginia, against an A grade college. We hardly expected to win this game but were determined to give a good account of ourselves and this we did. The score at the end of the first quarter stood 6-6. We scor ed by a long pass. Hunter to Pickel- simer. Emory and Henry, by the way, had only two other touchdowns scored on her team all year and went through an undefeated season. Their abundance of fresh men soon began to tell and the score ended as given above. However, the Ramblers nev er quit fighting. Boyd, Slade and Johnny Mason starred for Rutherford. Rutherford 0—Bingham Military Academy 0. The Ramblers next tackled Bingham Military Academy at Asheville and the spectators were kept on edge throughout the contest as first one side and then the other would threat en. C., was elected to captain the 1929 base ball team. We are sorry that his election came too late to have a cut made for this edition. Luke caught for the 1928 edition of the Ramblers and was one of the mainstays of that organization. He was second in hit ting with an average of .369 for the year. One of the smartest young catchcrs and the hardest worker to be found anywhere. He should make a great leader. THE MAN BEHIND THE RAMBLERS Coach Weaver came to Rutherford four years ago, having been gradu ated from Trinity College, now Duke University. While at Trinity he play ed on the Southern Championship team of 1924. Taking over the ath letic reins at Rutherford when the athletic life of the institution was at a low ebb he has succeeded, in placing this activity well in the forefront of junior colleges throughout the state. One of his first steps was to institute football as an intercollegiate sport, which Rutherford had never had be fore. He continued to improve the basketball and baseball teams until, during the past three years, his base ball team has not lost a series of games to any school, and several A grade colleges are to be found on the schedule. The baseball team has ac cordingly won the undisputed junior college championship for the past three years. In addition to winning championships Coach Weaver has in stilled into his men those principles of hard fighting, fair play and true sportsmanship which he holds to be of higher value than the winning of games. He may justly be called, not only a “maker of champiionSj” but al so a “maker of men.” BASKETBALL The 1927-28 basketball team ihad a fairly successful season, winning nine of twentyone games. Of the games lost, five were to A grade colleges, so we won nine and lost seven among junior colleges. The team was hard hit early in the season by the loss of Captain Yandle who was forced to withdraw from the squad because of an injury to his knee sustained in football. Van Griffin was appointed to captain the team for the remain der of the season. The feature games of the season were the two games with Wingate and the game with the Appalachian State Normal at Boone and the Catawba game here. Rutherford won the Wingate games, mainly through the great work of Monk Selden, ^minutive forward, who scored seventeen points here and twenty-two points at Wingate. He and his running mate, Claude Quick, were the leading scorers for the sea son. We lost the State Normal and Catawba games by three points each after two great scraps in which we led most of the way. At the conclusion of the season the team was tendered a supper by Prof. Johnston at which Tellus Bum garner was elected to captain next year’s team and letters were award ed to the following: Griffin, Bumgarner, Yandle, all given stars. Selden, Quick, Pickelsimer and Manager Abernathy were given let ters. The season’s scores follow: Rutherford 42, Hickory Athletic Club 21; at Rutherford. Rutherford 16, iMilligan 32, at Rutherford. Rutherford 28, Appalachian State Normal 31; at Boone. CAPTAIN-ELECT JAMES PICKELSIMER. Well remembered for his run for touchdown from kick-off against Oak Ridge. A great half back last year he should be ^ven better next year. Rutherford 22, Emory and Henry (Continued on page six) THE PASTIME THEATRE J. F. Miller, Owner and Manager, Hickory, N. C.
