Brevard College, Brevard, North Carolina, November 6, 1936. SPORT SLANTS By James Sturgis May isogooooogeoooooocA Last week in this column we predicted that the Tornado would beat Belmont Abbey; but our hopes of winning the game were blown to pieces by the visi tors last Saturday afternoon, 19-0. Bill Edwards played the best game he has ever played for the Tornadoes. He was in the thick of the fight from the start to the finish, and in our opinion is what story-book writers would cal “the sunny-haired boy who was the star of the game.” Many picks were handed in last week in the contest. There were seven upsets last Saturday in this contest, and two of the games turned out to be ties Boxing has become of interest to the boys in Taylor Hall. The first boxing matches were helc Monday night in the lobby, anc everybody had a good time ex cept those who were defeated. This is a good way of providing the boys with exercise, and may be sometime the g'rls may have a chauce to witness one of these bouts instead of attending a horse opera. FLASH - FLASH Frank Craven and Matt Herring are to engage in a little fistic com bat in the near fultre. Mr. Cra ven says they will fight when his opponent is ready. The bout wil be held in the lobby of Taylor Hall, with Harold Severs as ref eree. Sixteen-ounce gloves will be used. Everybody is invited. HUCKS WINS FIRST CONTEST Last week the Sports Diepart- ment decided to sponsor a weekly contest of picking winning foot ball teams for the week-end. The first contest turned out very suc cessful, with Tharp Huck’s miss ing only three guesses out of a possible twenty. David Grubbs was second, missing only four; while Kenneth Bedenbough was number three man in the contest, missing five. About seventy students partici pated in this first contest. Every week through the re mainder of the football season the CLARION will sponsor this contest on the sports page. This week the awards will be one theatre pass and twenty-five cents in trade at Macfie’s Drug Store. The contest is open to any student at Brevard College and to the faculty. The members of the CLARION staff are not allowed to take part. Time means a great deal to the individual in this contest. The box will be open each Frida,y morn ing in the hall of the Adminis tration Building. It will be placed beside the mail box. This box will be open only from 8 A. M. till 2 P. M., Saturday. Belmont started off the first quarter with long end runs and continued these runs throughout the game. The visitors had a line that outweighed the Tornado line by ten pounds to the man. The Belmont interference was near perfect during the entire game. Belmont scored during the first, second, and fourth quarters. “Wild” Bill Edwards, the captain of the Tornado, was the outstand ing player of the day. Although playing for the losers, Edwards was through on ’most every play. At different times throughout the game, he threw the Belmont men for a great loss of yardage. Hicks, Odom, and Ferguson also showed up well for Brevard. Hilton was the spark-plug of the Belmont at tack. He appeared to be equally good in running, kicking and pass ing. Brennon was the mainstay of the Belmont Abbey line. The Brevard Tornadoes will journey down to Buies’ Creek this week-end to engage with Camp bell College in a North Carolina Junior College Conference game. Campbell will be favored to win this game by a close score. The Tornadoes may pull the right strings, however, and take this game, performing one of foot ball’s many upsets. Coach Ran- son has been shifting the entire team this week to positions they have never played before. This shift may help the Tornadoes to win. C. “Home of Brevard College” Tag Football It has been a custom at every college and high school in the country to play tag football. During the past week this game has been in full swing at Brevard College. Everyone who has ever played the game likes it, and it is good exercise. The boys at college here have not been play ing this game at the right place, the. athletic field; instead the game has been played on the lawn of Taylor Hall. It would be appreciated by the students, faculty, and everyone if the games would ba contin ued on the athletic field and not on the lawn.
