In this column I shall do my best to review the Brevard College sports since last September. By. Sturgis May The first time that students at Brevard College will remember seeing our coach, Arthur J. Ran- »on, really sweat was at Wofford and Brevard game last fall, in which the Wofford Baby Terriers defeated the Tornado by a score 7 and 0. Ranson wanted his men to score when they were o n t h e one-foot line and four downs t o go^ but the Wofford line proved too stable for Brevard to score a marker that afternoon. You will remember the day the Ranson men took their second victory of the season when they defeated Coach John MacKorell’s eleven from Lees McRae Junior College at Banner Elk. The club that handed our football team their worst defeat of the season was the Mars Hill organization. The Baptists took the game with ease. Do you remember? Do you remember when James 0. Rogers, the bursar, was elect ed to captain the Brevard quin tet early this spring? Rogers and the basket-ball team did not have as successful a season as they had expected, but they won half the contests that they play ed. Brevard College Netters t f K:. ’|iv: ^ *■- ** ;, 11'. Can you remember when John Wahonick left the Brevard cam pus to join the Rochester Red Wings at their camp in Lees burg, Flordia? Wahonick is at Rochester now. Frank Cauble, flashy center fielder for the Brevard nine, led the Brevard team with the wil low this season, getting sixteen hits out of forty-seven attempts at the plate. Marshall Houts and Leon Stubbs followed with aver ages of 320 and 300. Name ab. h. p.c.t. Last, but not least, we men tion the Brevard tennis team and their record this spring. The Brevard netters lost to Mars Hill and Wingate and then de feated the Mars Hill 'netters in their last contest. As a whole, Coach Ranson has furnished Brevard with better sports this year than was ex pected. Oak Ridgii captured first place in the Junior Conference, with eight wins and two losses with league opponents. Presbyterian Juniors from M axton placed sec ond i.i the standings, with seven wins and three defeats. The winners of the Junior title and the Presbyterians each lost one game to Coach Arthur Ranson’s men this year. Mars Hill, Campbell, Boiling Springs, and Wingate were rated lower in the rankings this season than tlie other three members. Wingate was the only team in the league that failed to capture one conference game, while Boiling Springs won only one contest this season in conference play. Mars Hill chalked up its third win of the season over the Bre vard nine last Saturday at Mars Hill in a conference battle, which placed them fifth in the stand ings and dropped the Tornado nine from second place to the third position.
