THE CLARION Vol. XIV BREVARD COLLEGE, FEBRUARY 14, 1948 Number 5 Spring Semester Opens 'Home Economics Department Gives Fashion Show On the evening of Friday, Jan uary 30, the Home Economics de partment under the direction of Miss Katherine Stamey, presented a fashion show in the college aud itorium. Some of the clothes mod elled were made by the students but most of them were from Slack’s department store in Brevard. The clothes were divided into three groups, formal, semi-formal, and sports wear. The dresses, suits skirts, sweaters and slacks .were the latest fashions. Mrs. Dwight Nifong was narra tor for the event and described the clothes completely as they were modelled. The models participating were Marianne Gingele, Evelyn Morlock,’ Marie Ogawa, Tommy Allegre, Ro- mona Bagwell, Louise' Whitmire, Betty Gray Billings, Amelia Amos, Mary Ester Graybeal, Francis Sloop, Jean Kennickel, Carolyn Hawkins, Mary Chertock, Mrs. J. Everyone enjoyed seeing the beautiful clothes from Slacks and appreciated their co-operation and the worlc that the Home Ec onomics department and their in structor put into the show. To Hold Religious Emphasis Week On February 22 To 27 The observance of Religious Emphasis week will begin at Brevard college on Sunday night, February 22 and continue through Friday, February 27, it was - an nounced by President E. J. Col- trane today. Two guest ministers will be on the campus at this time to conduct religious programs sponsored by the college Religious Workers club. They are Rev. Charles B. Bowles, pastor . of the Broad Street Methodist church, of Statesville, and a member of the college board of trustees, and Rev. W. Arthur Kale, pastor of the ,Central Methodist church of Shelby. The Rev. Kale is also president of the Board of Edu cation of the Western North Car olina conference of the Metho dist church. “As in past years our Religious Emphasis week has been very suc cessful and proved a great in spiration to the students,” Dr. Coltrane stated. “We are looking forward to having these two pastors visit with us during the week, and feel sure that their messages will mean much to the student 'body at Brevard,” he con cluded. According to reports, these men will alternate in speaking at the regular morning chapel services. The night services will follow this schedule also. Plans are being made to continue the prayer ser- —Turn To Page Four Kiwanis Governor 34 Students Receive Diplomas At Mid-Winter Graduation Tues. DR. E.'J. COLTRANE, pres ident of Brevard College since its founding in 1933, was re cently installed as Governor of the Carplinas district of Kiwanis clubs. He was presented the governor’s gavel by former governor, Dupre Rhame, of Greenvillei, S. C., at installation ceremonies at the Bryant House here on January 16th and installed A. Ferry Barber as lieutenant-governor. He and Mrs. Coltrane plan to attend the ^ Ki wanis International convention in San Francisco, Calif., in June. REPORT MADE ON CONFERENCE Brevard College delegates to the Methodist Student Conference held recently at Centehtlary church in Winston-Salem were Mr. and Mrs. Roy, Glenn Davis, Betty Mellard, and Sarah Puett. The theme of the conference was “The quality of a Churchman.” Dele gates were there from all col leges in the state. Also there were students from China and Greece, Negro students from Ben nett College, Indian students from Pembroke, and a girl from Li beria. The spirit of brotherhood was really felt at the conference, es pecially when a friendship circle was formed and the Lord’s Pray er was heard in different lang-. uages. > . To Elect New Vice-President It was announced today ' that there will be a meeting of the sophomore class on Saturday, February 14, during the' chapel period. The purpose of the meet ing is to elect a new vice-presi dent. Stevenson And Trowbridge Carry Out Program. Hon or Students Named Graduation diplomas were pre sented to 25 members of the college graduatingjr class and nine members of the pre-college gradu ating class at the mid-winter com mencement exercises at Brevard college last Tuesday morning. Due to impossible weather conditions, ■Dr. Dwight Ware, scheduled speaker, was unable to get here, and because of the illness of President E. J. Coltrane, the di plomas were presented by C. H. Trowbrjdge. Dean J. J. Steven son, Jr., presided at the ceremony. Dr. Coltrane’s farewell mes sage was presented to the mem bers of the classes by Dean Stevenson, who said, “Our presi dent wishes for you the best in life, and his interest will follow you whereever you go.” ' Prior to the presentation of the diplomias Mr. Trowbridge spoke briefly. He is a former president of Weaver college before it was merged to form Brevard college and a beloved member of the fac ulty. “This is a time of joy and sorrow in the life of each of you,” he said. “It is a time when you will realize the many things you have neglected to do in college and wish that you had done. But this is good, because it enables you to see more clearly how to build into your lives the things which the Master wishes for you to accomplish.” Following the presentation of diplomas. Dean Stevenson an nounced the students who gradu ated with honors. Three members of the college graduating class who made a straight A average during their two years were Jas per Dudly, Darr Wise and Wilmer Wilson. C.; Jasper Donnell Dud- —Turn To Page Three TAYLOR HALL ELECTS COUNCIL The girls of Taylor Hall recent ly elected their House Council to serve for the rest of the year. Alice Langston, who left at the end of the semester, was succeed ed by Lee Chestnut, as president. Secretary of the council is Elsie Prestwood. The two other mem bers are Margie Wilkins and Gloria Bost. The chief duty of this group is to see that the girls abide by the rules set up for them. 27 New Students Enroll Here For Spring Semester Twenty-seven new students have enrolled in Brevard College for the 1948 Spring semester. Most of the newcomers are from North Carolina, but several are from neighboring states.^ The students and faculty of Brevard College extend a hearty welcome to all of the new students and hope that they will enjoy their years here. King And Queen Of Hearts To Be Named At Dance The King and Queen of Hearts will be named Saturday night at the Delphian Valentine dance. Eliminations being made in a vote by the student body on Friday, the final votes will be cast by students at the dance. Bobby Davis and his orchestra will play for the dance, which is to begin at 8:00. All proceeds from this affair is going toward buying a time clock for the gym.
