PAGE FOUR THE CLARION / February 4, 1949 To Grow Bulbs On College Farm 4050 ACRES WILL BE PLANTED THIS YEAR ON FARM A.rrangements Are Mi\de With Prominent Florida Grower For Conversion Arrangements have been made to grow bulbs on an extensive scale on the college farm here, ac cording to Dr. E. J. Coltrane, pres ident of th^e institution. “When these bulbs reach matur ity and flower out, they will pre sent a panorama of striking beau ty,” Dr. Coltrane said. From 40 to 50 acres will be planted this year in bulbs and cul tivation is already under way. The planting of the bulbs is expected to begin March 1 and they will be shipped here directly from Hol land, the bulb center of the world. After they are developed, they will be sold in all parts of the country. Well Experienced Alexander P. Thomas, of Cocoa, Fla., an experienced bulb and cit rus grower, has leased the prop erty for five years. Negotiations have been under way for several months between Mr. Thomas and tlie board of trustees and Dr. Col trane said he was delighted that the farm could be used for such a meritorious project. It was through the efforts of Julian A. Glazener, county agent, that the initial contract was made with Mr. Thomas. “Just as Tran sylvania is noted for its many ad vantages, the county should be come a leader in the production of gladioli bulbs,” - Mr. Glazener stated. Several other men, among them W. J. Wallis, Chiles Cook, Henry Carrier and Jim Morrow, have grown bulbs here-successfully for a number of years, he said fur ther. Music Department At College Here Bruce Atkins Livengood has as sumed his duties as a member of the music department of Brevard college. He received his Master’s degree in music this January from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music where he was a member of the, faculty. Livengood received his bache lor’s degree in music at Cincin nati in 1948, and prior to that, served three years as a member of the junior faculty. Since join ing the conservatory, Livengood has also served as organist and di rector of music at May Street Presbyterian church in Cincinnati. During the war the young man, who is only 24 years old, served in the army as chaplain’s- assistant, and at the time of his discharge, was post organist at Fort Knox, Ky. Livengood’s musical studies have centered around the piano and organ, and among the noted musicians with whom he has stu died are the late Dr. J. R. Ninnis, Queen’s college; James Crosland, Jacksonville college of music; Miss Amy Lee, Cincinnati Conser vatory; Frederick H. Parker, Co lumbia college; and at present, v/ith Dr. Karol Liszniewski at Cin cinnati. He will be in charge of all vocal groups, including the chorus, the choir, the smaller groups such as the mixed quartets which are sing ing in many of the churches. He will teach choir organization and direction, the study of hymns, and the history of music. He is also a teacher of piano. The program of general music at Brevard will also be under the direction of Livengood. Morris, Jr., of Bre vard, is among the students at the University of North Carolina to be named to the Dean’s list for the fall quarter. To be included in this list, students must make a minimum of 15 hours and make averages of 90-95. Morris is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Morris and is married to the former Miss Virginia HaU. He attended Brevard high school and Brevard college, and was com missioned an ehsign in the navy during the last war.
